Thanks, I need to do this today as the battery has gone flat in the key I use all the time. Any other gotchas?

Edit - job done and easy peesy, 1 screw to get the key apart, then 2 screws to get the immobiliser apart, swap out the battery and put back together. 5 mins job done and the key works again.

        • ok guys, i learned the hard way wasted like $60 on a new remote transponder key, i got a 433hmz transponder key for my prado, but turns out mine being the early 120 series uses a 304hmz transponder, still cost less than toyota for both

here is the newer key http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/251308344...84.m1497.l2649

here is the older key http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121172019...84.m1497.l2649

          • So once you buy a key I assume you get it cut at a key cutter shop so it fits. How then do you program the ECU/immobiliser to accept the key to start the car? (I'm sure it's in this thread somewhere but it's 8 pages now)

            • My Master key shell, broke. Paid $7 on banggoods.com for 2 blank shells, took 14days to arrive . Took the blanks to Adelaide locksmiths on hutt street and had the key cut for $14.00. The guy even transferred the electronic module for me, one simple screw. Toyota wanted $80 for the shell and, another locksmith wanted $115.00 just to cut the blank. BTW The spare key (grey or black) has a chip in it. The master key without the electronics module will not start the car.

                • key questions

Ok, just finished reading the whole thread, took a while! but i still have some questions, hard to believe i know.
I have just ordered 3 blank key/module cases from ebay for $15, came with 3 batteries so i thought they might come in handy, although it seems the batteries will outlast the crappy key cases.
I have the grey master key to unlock the doors and start the car, the one with the chip in it obviously.
I assume that the transponder key which remotely unlocks the car also disarms the immobiliser? or is it only when the key goes in the ignition barrel that it immobilises?
And how do i get another master key with the chip in it?, all the links i clicked on had expired.

                  • All the keys have the transponder chip in them , it's a completely separate system the immobiliser and the central locking
There's ways to program more keys yourself just do a search

                    • key cutting

Thanks for that info. Today i went on a key cutting expedition. I bought 3 blank shells and 3 new batteries off ebay for $15, good value i thought and the cases fit together well and seem strong. I took the blank and old key with the cracked shell down to Bunnings as it was close and i had read that someone else did it on here. They called the key cutter and he was not confident with the cutting machine and he ended up stuffing up the new key. At least i didnt have to pay for it but that was one of the 3 blanks down. The 2nd one i took to a shopping centre key cutter and they did a perfect job in 10 minutes for $15. The key works perfectly and i now have remote central locking. I will buy a small key safe to attach to the vehicle and put my grey spare in that.

Same deal. Been using my cheapie every day for a year now and no problems. My local key cutter was reluctant to cut the blank as he said the length was slightly longer. But for $7 he did it, without warranty, and it has worked just fine.

At the rate the genuine Toyota keys crap out, then how can they charge the prices they do? Buy 3 spares now before you need them and then you will be ready when your Toyota plastic cracks open.

A 'friend of mine' is a former Bunnings employee, and told me once upon a time long long ago in a galaxy far far away not to go to Bunnings to get car keys cut or any other double sided keys. It is tricky doing double sided keys, particular if the original key you are cutting from is significantly worn. Best to take it to a Cobbler.

                          • car keys are ALWAYS best to have cut from the key number if its avaliable. if you just have the key copied you will end up wearing out the barrel

                            • I had a 2nd key cut today as we were only given 1 when we bought it. No buttons. Opens the doors manually and starts the car for $130. Done in a few mins and saved me the hassle of ebay and then key cutters not wanting to cut blanks off ebay. Time is money.

                              • Steering lock

Try taking the pressure off the steering lock....ie turn the wheel one way or the other.
