  • Not Drawers, Flat Shelf (Full Length) & East-West Frig mount instead.

Prado 120 Storage: Shelf as an alternative to Drawers.

Build Task: Frig & Shelf system for 2 travelling adults in a 120 Prado.

Design Brief: Remove (2) middle and (2) rear seats to maximise luggage space, make provision for (1) Rear Storage and (2) Frig. Final items to be easily installed and removed.

    Rear Storage. (1)
The aim was to ‘fully’ use the extra space in the middle seat area, with a single shelf, allowing for a ‘cut out’ to accommodate the bulk of the frig. A modest Luggage protector was planned (for items placed on top of the shelf), to reduce fall-out in the case of rapid de-acceleration.

Heavy luggage is planned to be placed under shelf, and thus “generally” restrained by the shelf in the case of rapid de-acceleration or accident.

The shelf to be mounted using existing “standard” seat mounting points, as these are already designed for moderate loading.

It was decided to ‘level’ the floor area in the middle of the car, to standardise storage space, so a raised plywood ‘flooring’ was placed over the seat mounts for the middle row of seats.

The shelf was built using a simple steel frame, and covered in 7mm plywood, and carpet. This was my first exposure to arc welding, so a wire / base was ruled out. The weight of the main shelf (excluding frig mount, and centre floor), is about 25kgs, and is very sturdy.

Above: The frame is built in one solid piece. The Plywood and carpet are yet to be applied.

Above: Preparation for the Frig Supports, and false floor. The timber under the support legs is to spread the load over an area of carpet.

    The Frig (2)
Waeco 60 litre (very tall): Placed ‘East-West’ behind the passenger seat, as long term planning decrees an awning on the passenger side of the car quite likely. Placing the frig east west still allows reasonable access to both the Frig, and the middle storage areas via the rear passenger doors.

The existing seat mounts provide a solid base for the unit. Static mount, no slides required. Removing the middle seats is trivial.

The mount was originally made for use on either side, but was subsequently finalised to the passenger side. Placing the frig east-West behind the driver is more space efficient, as there is no need to allocate space for the “I’ll just take a short nap” seat tilt for SWMBO.

Simple tie-down brackets were made from a Bunnings item, with a simple tie-down system was run through a heavy eye-bolt which was located on an unused seat mount.

A simple 3:1 pulley (boom vang) is in the space under the frig, and can be removed via two clips.

Thats a job well done, tons of storage plus a bed base for short trips if you can sror all your gear on the bottom level.Just pack the gear you dont want to use frequently on the bottom front to save removeing to many tubs to get to your stuff.I would recommend a cargo barrier for behind the drivers seat as it will be alot safer, you would be amazed how things will move around on the tracks.have a look at how I dis my second row storage as I already had a draw system

Like the way it clips into the third row seat mounts.

G'day Bworth, Great setup! I want to build something similar but without the fridge mount and with the ability to leave the middle row seats in. ie: hinged partition that can fold back on to the rear flat section if I want to use the middle row of seats. I was wondering - to save me some time would you have a schematic or some measurements of the frame you built? Also what size steel pipe did you use? Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

            Hi DavenReef,

Sorry, I only just saw the message...

The basic measurement was based upon the width between the 3rd row seat mounts which on our car is 1270mm (127cm).

The biggest issue for me was the lack of a good clear "flat" work area in the garage. Getting things 'square' was a bit of hit and miss. You might consider doing some of the welds of the vertical supports one at a time so that you can adjust the 'fit'. I actually did the north-south runs, with the 'legs', then spot welded the back on, whilst it was all still in the car (lots of heavy cloth protection). Short sections (140mm) first, then the long one (1010mm) at the rear; then the front, which is slightly narrower (1270mm) than the rear (1290mm), but it doesn't much matter.

I used 25mm x 25mm square section steel from Bunnings. Painted blue, not Galvanized which I believe gives off dangerous fumes when welded??.

It was my first arc welding job ($69 welder + $40? auto facemask) and I believed that the larger section was more tolerant to lower weld quality, anyway, it would have been ok I believe with the smaller section; next down is 19mm x 19mm I think, and fits neatly into the larger size which might better that a hinge to join the 2 sections together?? ie Butt join the front 90 degree welds, leaving the open section ready to accept a middle section extension??

I ran cross-bracing across the car, rather than the other way, so that in the case of an accident, it would not impale forward.

Certainly we were pleased with a recent trip to Tasmania. Just getting rid of the middle seats was a such a bonus space-wise.

2 Very Rough Plans enclosed. I haven't included details of the frig shelf, but could add it upon request.

Sorry the scale is lousy!!!, the A:B line in Page 1, is intended to show the measurements of the unit should you only wish to remove the 3rd row of seats, and leave the middle row in place. Once again WE removed both the 3rd row AND the middle row of seats to maximise the space.

(I am not getting a job as a draftsman any time soon!)

Thanks so much for the info. I think I have decided how to go ahead, with some help from your schematics. I'll update with some photo's when I get a chance.
