  • Max weight on rear door

    Hi All,
Need some advise, what would be the maximum weight permissible on the rear door. I have currently a MTZ 265/70/17 with Professor Chippy ingenious chopping board wedge plate installed . I want to put my hi-lift jack there as well (kaymar attachment). Would that be too heavy? The jack is approx 20kg-25kg. I don't want to have any cracking door problem.

    Cheers,

Note: I tried searching the forum but could not find anything similar.

    Hmmm, good question.

I'm sure there are people who are doing this already.
I had a rear door crack on me and it wasnt due to too much weight. It was more to do with the door flying open and hitting the stop/ lock thing to hard. Car was parked on a slope and my daughter didnt hold the door well enough when opening it.

I think it would be OK under normal circumstances. Closed it has the hinges and the wedge thing near the latch, Care would be needed when opening.

Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

Anyone thought about a mod to add a gas strut to the rear door? Hmmm - thinking now.....

Interesting question: Especially considering all the add-ons you can get for the rear door such as the extra holders that sit off the spare rear wheel and also the trek table type set-ups.

IMHO things like trek table should be fine hence of the low weight when its closed. I'm only worried when the a lot of weight is hanging too far out of the door itself while driving in the rough terrain (the bouncing effect of hi-lift jack). Is there a way to strengthen the door hinges or brackets for the wheel carrier itself?

Re: Max weight on rear door

I had a hi-lift jack mounted on a previous vehicle rear door (Pajero). I wouldn't do it again as I was concerned about the way it was vibrating on the door. I carried a hi-lift inside the Mav bolted to the drawer unit. I have never used it and I probably won't fit it to the Prado.

I think I would stay away from placing my jack on the tyre carrier than. Better be safe then sorry later.
              Thanks for the advise.

In relation to the trek table, I meant when the table was lowered and items were being placed on it, but agree that items hanging off the door whilst in motion are of greater concern and present a higher risk of causing damage.

Re: Max weight on rear door

If it were mine, i would look at just mounting the bar with holes on the spare at the back, and hiding the head and bottom plate somewhere in the car, under the seat, or tied in somewhere, to minimise the weight on the door, and tkeep the pins out of the weather so it will work, the odd time you "might" use it.

Re: Max weight on rear door

Spot on Darren. It really amuses me the number of people who carry these bloody heavy things and (a) think they can use them for changing tyres, (b) leave them exposed to rain and dust to the extent that they will not operate until properly cleaned and lubricated, (c) don't have the receiver boxes welded onto the bars or (d) simply don't know how to the use the things properly and safely (see (a)).

My learned colleagues used one to replaced a damaged wheel on their Patrol. Jack collapsed whilst rear of vehicle was up and wheel had not been properly bolted on. Top of jack speared through rear barn door. A couple of wheel studs broke off. The remaining studs broke because they drove off with the wheel not properly centred and tightened.

Of course, when you are out in the "lands" east of Kalgoorlie and west of Uluru, we all know how easy it is to find studs to suit Patrols!

Total damage bill - alloy wheel, tyre, barn door - about $5,500.

Re: Max weight on rear door

On the topic of jacks, has anybody looked into the cost of the air jacks the comp guys use? Seems to be a safe and easy way to jack a vehicle and you're not carrying around a huge lump of steel.

they are an hyd jack, like an air shock, with ahhandle that is the pump, about 1" per handle pump lift.

just under 1k Aus at the moment I think.

Not a good idea for the alignment of your rear door. I'm having problems with the door not lining up now.
