  • Hidden Compressor outlet mounted outside the rig.

    Hi guys,

Just had to show you my latest brainwave idea. I have finished mounting my compressor under the bonnet and it is switched on/off from inside. This saves opening the bonnet. The next thing was "where do I mount the compressor outlet"
after much though and my need to have easy access to the outlet was to mount it under the left hand rear reflector. First i removed the nut holding the unit in and found it had a tab holding it into place. Once the nut is removed the unit is pull out on the right side to release the tab. Then the unit comes away from the bumper. After modifying the rear of the reflector and putting a spring onto the retaining bolt the unit an simply be pulled out from the right side and then twisted up to show the compressor outlet which i have mounted using the rear bumper support bolt hole. A bit of rubber around it to stop any mud or water getting past and thats about it. The outlet hides inside the reflector housing when it is back in place. Works great....

When you have finished with the compressor just unplug the line and twist the reflector back into position. Firstly locating the tab on the left side of the unit. Then just positioning the unit back into its place. The spring actually pulls it back into its spot and the locating lugs align it correctly. It stays firm and doesn't move.

    Have fun.....

Good inginuity. Can I ask by unclipping the rear reflector each time, do you think that it may weaken due to many inflations, or are you confident in its longevity.
How did you route the air hose to the rear. Did you insert it into through the grommets from the engine bay and run it through the internal cable tray to the rear. If you could, can you take a few photos. Good idea. Well done.

            Hi,

I used solid 5/8" nylon air hose and push in hose end adapters. I ran the line from the compressor down the inner guard and under the body cable tied to the group of fuel and brake lines running all the way to the back. At the rear diff i followed the fuel tank filler tube until it reach the inside of the guard and then it was just a mater of straight back to the air coupling. The hose doesn't have to go inside the rig anywhere. I will get some more photos tomorrow of how it looks from underneath. About the longevity, I used a piece of the hard air hose which just fits through the reflectors original mount hole and over the mount bolt. This is used as a guide for the spring. I had to drill a small hole through the mount bolt which stays attached to the reflector unit. The spring goes on the inside of the tube and connects to the mount bolt through the hole that i drilled. The other end of the spring attaches to the inner body. Sounds a bit techo but, believe me it is pretty simple. I think there should be no time limits on how long it will last as the spring is the only thing doing any work. Nothing should wear out except your time showing everyone what you have just done. HEHEHEHE. You can finish it off with a piece of rubber to shield the rear of the reflector from any mud or crud. If you want to you can even fill in the hole cut in the back of the reflector to stop anything getting into it. Not sure yet if i need to do that or not. Either way it is an easy fit.

Hope that helps a little. I will get some more closer photos later. Good luck..

Re: Hidden Compressor outlet mounted outside the rig.

I cut the back of the reflector straight off so it is an easy task to seal (using silicone sealant or two part epoxy) a bit of soft thin rubber across the hole. If you leave it a bit loose in the centre the air coupling can still push into the back of the reflector which will help keep the air coupling clean and leave the reflector fully sealed. That's tomorrows job for me. I cut a small hole in the centre of a piece of rubber 150 x 150mm and pushed it over the air coupling before i put the reflector back in. This covers the whole back of the unit and keeps most of the muck away from the hole but i think the dust would still get in if i don't seal the back as i have indicated.

Re: Hidden Compressor outlet mounted outside the rig.

This was one of the best modifications i did to the Prado after fitting the air compressor, was a remote fitting down the back. I fitted a tee piece and fitted two fittings the arb fitting and a nitto fitting. It makes it so much easier not having to pop the hood. I can also now reach the trailer. The nylon hose is not expensive and the fittings are relatively cheap too. All available at your local blackwoods/ Covs/ atkins dealer. I used 1/2 but 5/8 would be even better. I would like to fit a small air receiver somewhere under neath too or behind the front bullbar.
                  Cheers

Re: Hidden Compressor outlet mounted outside the rig.

I think i have finally solved the sealing problem of the reflector. I cut a piece of 2mm rubber into the shape of the inside of the reflector housing. I then covered the front of it with al foil being careful not to crease it. After pushing it in to the housing hard up against the back of the reflector i then sealed it in place with sealistic. Looks fine as a reflector from the back and it now is sealed from the elements. I think that should do it.

can't wait for the pics. i have thought about the rear air location, but always thought that dust and muck would end up fouling the air connector. Good work "Gimp" and definately a different idea to look at in the future.

Re: Hidden Compressor outlet mounted outside the rig.

Just got back from a great weekend away at Fosilbrock about 800k's round trip. I fitted a 25mm thick piece of black foam in the the back of the reflector which covered the end of the compressor outlet. We went through a lot of river crossing's and got bogged in the muddiest of places, covering a lot of dusty dirt roads. Happy to report that the reflector was clean as a whistle and the air compressor outlet was completely dirt and dust free. Owww and by the way the compressor outlet worked a treat.. i think it is a success..
