  • Side Step "SWB Prado"

Hi everyone this is DarkCroy "You can call me DC if u want  ". This is my first post in Prado point although i have been around in the shadows for quite a while 8) . I own a short wheel base Prado which i noticed after couple of discussions that it is not available in Australia  . Well i live in United Arab Emirates in Sharjah "next to Dubai" and the SWB is quite popular here. Anyway i think i went off the topic.

It happened that during one of my trips i got stuck n my car's wheels were off ground n i was trying to rock my car side to side while standing on the side step and ......... you know what happened. I bent my side step. After coming back home i inspected the damage and noticed the weak brackets thet is used to hold the step to the body so i decided to make a stronger one which is fitted to the chassis. I went to a local fabrication shop n told them what i needed and i showed them my designs and ideas  and they agreed to make it for me. They got em ready for me now all that's left is the black powder coat to be done . I am expecting them to be ready on Tuesday. I'll post the picture as soon as possible "Might also show u the design  ".

    Regards,
    DC

This is the primary product. They prepared it for me to see how it looks and the size and the way it will fit.

      From the other side

Fitting the step is all bolt based "No welding" and it was all made according to original holes available on the chassis

      All direct bolt brackets

Yeah you are right pradogxlv6 That was before they weld it completely. They just wanted to show me how it looks when fitted like that to my car. They thought i might change my mind about the design or something.

Your fabricator has done some nice work on those mounting brackets  looks smick

Are you intending to use crush tubes in the chassis rail?

              Crush tubes

To stop the chassis being squashed when you do the bolts up or deforming under stress.

The chassis is a square hollow section... any damage/deforming to the sides of it will make it very weak in the other direction.

Hey Mick you r starting to scare me to death  I have no idea about crash tubes but what you r saying is
Btw i asked the fabricator that in case of getting hit on the side by another car he told me that he made the tube in such a way that it will take the impact and if it is severe it will get Bend without damaging the chassis. that's what he told me but do u suggest adding that "Crush tube" if yes then how and where it should be installed. Thanks for your advices anyway

Here's an extract from the Australian National Guidlines for Modifying Vehicles to help show things a little clearer:

2.6.6 Spacer tubes, crush tubes, or stepped bolts must be used wherever a bolt passes
through a hollow section of the chassis. The tube should be 3mm or larger wall
thickness and welded in position. The following diagram 2(b) shows examples of
                      spacer tubes.

                        Re: Side Step "SWB Prado"

A picture is worth a thousand words, In both cases.
The side steps look abolutely awesome.
And the drawing of the Crush (not crash) tubes explains that beautifully.

If no crush tubes are used, when they torque up the nuts n bolts the chassis rail will deform inwards (crush).
Not the best as there will be less force holding the steps solid to the chassis.
With the crush tubes in place the full torque of the bolts will clamp those beauties to the chassis perfectly.
Another less perfect design would be if your fabrication shop can make back plates to sandwich the chassis..

But again , they are fantastic looking steps for sure.

                        Jeff.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.
