  • What Shocks to buy?

    Hi Everyone,

My first post so please bear with me :-)
The front shocks on my 2004 Grande are shot and the local suspension shop (is it appropriate to mention business names here?) has recommended KYB struts with the original springs. Of course I will lose the front ride adjustments but I have a few questions that I hope may be answered here.
    1. Does disconnection of the front shocks electronics have any adverse effects elsewhere with the car computer etc?
    2. Do I retain adjustability in the rear shocks assuming I dont change them
    3. What are the thoughts on KYB shocks?
I don't do much 4wdriving and am not looking for a lift at all
Any other advice or thoughts would be most welcome

    Cheers
    Olvansta (Graham)

Well at least you've posted your question in the right area Graham. There are a number of threads discussing Grande suspension lift. Sit down with a could one and start trolling. Here is one just to get you started... http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post262802

      1. No
      2. Yes
      3. Haven't heard of anyone using KYB on pradopoint. Try Bilstein, OME, TJM, Ironman, Toughdog

Another option is EFS besides those listed above.
2004 Prado GXL. v6 auto, ARB deluxe bar, exhaust, 2" EFS lift kit, Outback Acc rear bar,
rallye 2000 spots, roof mount dvd, dig_options stereo, toyota roof bars.
        More to come!

          Graham,

KYB make two front struts for the Prado.
          1. Excel-G which is a direct replacement for the OEM strut, no better, no worse.
          2.
Skorched4 which is a stronger, larger bore strut with better fade resistance qualities.

My personal preference in this price range is the Lovells Gas Legend, which offer a slightly larger bore than the Skorched 4 (36mm v 35mm) as well as a larger diameter shaft (18mm v 16mm) and a 70,000km/3yr warranty. Plus they have an adjustable spring seat on the strut which allows you to regain original front ride height due to spring sag, which may be useful if you are retaining your OEM spring.

There are also many other brands available, most of which are listed here.

I notice that you are only changing the front struts, however you should be aware that your rear shocks are probably just as worn.
