  • Rear Bump Stop

    Hi,

I recently blew a rear Firestone air bag. Rather than replace the bags, I'm going to fit a stiffer spring. I've cut the bump stop when I installed the air bags. Do I need to replace the bump stop or can I get away without it?

If I have to replace it, are they available aftermarket or do I have to get geniune?

    Thanks,

    Hi gxl d4d
What were the circumstances leading up to the air bag going off?
I currently have the Firestones assisting medium duty Old man Emu springs.
In my opinion you would need to replace the cut down bump stops.
Toyota wreckers or 4WD wreckers in your area should be able to source you a pair, its not as though they should be worn or damaged.

Agree if your removing the air bags you should replace the bump stop. You could possibly find someone installing air bags and just swap bump stops.

I called a few aftermarket places and they all said they don't make a bump stop for the Prado. I ended up ordering a set on geniune ones for $115 each.

My air bags were fine when they were installed with my factory springs. When they were installed with my new springs one leaked within a few weeks so I'm guessing they were damaged during installation. When I hook up my trailer, the rear end only drops 20mm so I'll remove the air bag and fit a 20mm taller spring.

Rear springs generally have a fairly standard length per manufacturer and increase load carrying capacity by using a higher rate spring, so it's probably not as easy as just selecting a spring 20mm longer than what you have now. The spring rate needs to be considered also:

The existing spring is a Lovells TRS119. I'll be replacing it with a TRR119. Both 261lb/inch, 20mm difference in length.

Yep, serves me right, I should've asked what spring you already had. Lovells do their rear springs a bit different to the rest, being the same rate should be the same ride quality when empty too.
