  • Cv binding?

Well gentlemen and gentlewomen...a problem. A little while back (2000km perhaps) I had some new front struts fitted - Ironman. Prior to fitting them I had some TJM Gold struts and springs which gave it 800mm in height and only 840mm droop. After the fitting I achieved a droop of 870mm each side and no gain in height - this is not the problem! Anyway, a couple of days after I had been playing in some mud with it, I noticed that the front left hand wheel smelled of brake (like it just had a hard work out) and that the wheel and studs and center was very hot compared with the other side. So I jacked it up and had a look and a play, and that's when I noticed the problem. I noticed that the wheel was harder to turn than the other side and that as I turned the wheel there was a couple of tight spots AND when the wheel hit those tight spots it actually caused the UCA to jump/move up and down slightly as it passed over those tight spots. Is this what CV binding is? Well, being the forward thinking fella that I am, I already had one of Amts's diff drop kits, so I thought 'Oh well I'll just put that in and that'll fix that!'. So I did that but it still does it. It only does it at full droop because I put a jack under the LCU while it was at full droop and jacked it up off full droop and then spun the wheel and it didn't do it. The other thing I noticed was some weeping around the inner seal of the inside joint (the one closest to the diff center). But the over heating of the wheel is intermittent - sometimes it'll be hot, other times as cool as the other side... so I dunno! But I wouldn't have thought that at that height I would have had CV binding (I only bought the diff drop kit for the future if I ever went higher). And one last thing, with that amount of droop I am already hitting on the strut springs with the UCA's, so I don't know how some of you get more droop than that out of a standard set of control arms. have you checked the wheel bearing?

i have my prado sitting at 4" from standard, and i am right at the limit with a 40mm diff drop and aftermarket upper control arms.

at your height and droop, you would be damaging the upper control arm ball joint as it runs out of travel/movement.

also, at that height, you're probably not running the correct wheel alignment settings (read:safe)

aftermarket CV shafts have much less travel than the genuine ones. if you have replaced the shafts with cheaper aftermarket units, this might be the cause.

if you ever come up to darwin, let me know and i can take a look at it for you, and have a chat too while we're at it.

    cheers

8608, actually that'd be great! I was thinking of getting it looked at up there 'cause we are just about to head to Tasmania, so I'd like to know what's goin' on before I go. I'll PM ya when I work out when I can get up there. Thanks Paul.
