  • looking for lift off

Hey all. New member here and new to the 4x4 sence too. Basically bought 2005 120 prado few weeks back and looking to fit the front and bring it level with the rear. It already has bilstein's in the rear not sure on product codes but wondering what the bilsteins are like and whether to get new gear all round or just do the fronts.
Also looking for some advice to what springs and gear to use.
Looking at putting arb bullbar and possible winch as well. Getting basket this wk and in the rear have drawer system will be putting fridge and a lot of gear into the boot.

Thanks, for the help and advice in advance.
    Aaron

There are quite a lot of info in the suspension section. Grab a coffee and some time and have a browse.

In short, to answer your question, Bilstein shocks are pretty good. They have been very popular combined with King springs as well as other brands.

If the rears are in OK condition and they are yellow and blue in colour, it is most likely the model that Bilstein sells here in Oz or it could be re-valved versions from Auto-craft in Geelong. So if the rears are OK, then change out the fronts to match. The good thing with the Bilsteins is that the spring seat for the strut can be raised or lowered to suit your changing loads when you add accessories. There are other brands that do this also.

When upgrading suspension, it is best done once you have added all the accessories like bullbar, winch, dual batts etc. Then you know what the final weight is and choose the spring accordingly. It won't matter so much with the Bilsteins due to the adjustable spring seat on the front strut. This does not apply to the rear shocks though. Most people will choose medium springs for the rear and then add airbags for towing or fully loaded for a trip. Just pump up the airbags to raise the back end to the lifted height.
