  • Sagging OME Suspension, any way of recharging it?

As stupid as this may sound, I just have not had time to do anything about my sagging suspension (trying to get the injectors fixed is taking up all my time)

Since we bought the Goldstream Camper it has become a real problem and I need to get it fixed within the next 2 weeks (trip to Bribie planed)

Anyway I had a chance to get under the Prado over the weekend and the shocks took my eye, turns out they are a pair of OME Nitrocharger Sports with '60004' and 'D 13OCL0 3" stamped on them.

I have no idea how old they are, years or klms, but I'm wondering if there is anyway of recharging them?

If not, as I said I need to get new suspension on asap. I'm on Brisbane North side, anyone have any word of mouth recommendations of somewhere to get this done?

I have 130kg ball weight on the camper, and planning on putting in a cargo barrier. We are building up the rig for our Lap around Oz.....recommendations and approximate costs welcomed!

Thx Roo, I used to live in Mooroka before I switched to the north, I know exactly where Fulcurm are. I figured it was the springs, as the shocks are obviously, well, shock absorbers, but thought if there was a way to avoid replacing at least one part of the set up I could save some coin, we are having to do all of this very very much on a tight budget.

    cheers!

Springs are the cheapest component on a suspension kit - about $160 a pair.
Failing that, you could go for airbags to get your height back when fully loaded but it will depend on how much the springs have sagged. Have you got any bottom of rim to wheel arch measurements?

MMR I have the Toughdog rears (springs and shocks) from my past suspension if you want them. 120,000km and based on the new OME pretty much unsagged. I trust the springs just not the front struts.

Just down the road from you. Equivalent more or less to OME 896s.

        OME 896: 390mm free length and 318 lb/"
        Toughdog TDC975H: 390mm free length and 320 lb/"

        http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...nsion-Database

Easy enough to do yourself if you want a quick cheap fix. Front springs available too but not as easy though still do'able. Otherwise new springs and/or airbags. Can you check the wire diameter of the rear springs and that way we may be able to tell which spring you have?

I'd help out too but I am running out of minutes before we go away.... Guess that is why I am on here, work avoidance.

Anyway I have heard that Roo can only drink a 6 pack no faster than every 10 minutes so not too bad an offer! Let's know if you want the bits and I will drop them off. You can have the knackered front struts too............

You may have to get new springs for the front. Just send me a PM so we can arrange the times. Just some petrol money to get to you and a couple of beers.

Very generous, John and MJ. I understand that MJs front Toughdog springs are ok, just one the front struts that is unusable. BTW, Toughdog springs are made by Kings, so they are good gear.

Wouldn't a cheap fix, at least for the rear in terms of the sag be a set of rear spacers..?? Easy enough to install on your own as well...

Wow, great responses, what a community! Being that we are building this up for our lap around Oz, is this used gear a 'get out of jail for now' solution, but money I might have to spend in the end anyway? Don't get me wrong, I am very interested and appreciative of these offers, but I'm a travel agent, I am a looooong way out of my depth here on if this might just be a stop gap.

See the car only has 100,000k's on it now and it's sagging like crazy, so if mjrandoms gear has 120,000k's would it not be just about shot as well?

I hope I don't sound like I'm not appreciating all of this (I really am) but I really don't know what I am doing!! If I have to spend the money now we will make it happen, but at the same time, if going with a bunch of used gear, some cold beers, and an afternoon of lots of 'learning' for me will give me the same result, I'm all for it!

Currently I have an OME medium kit with airbags quoted for $1900, EFS 100kg kit with airbags for $1400, and then the ironman medium kit no airbags for $1400

Clearly a lot of coin in anyones language!

Oh and the springs on there now have a wire diameter of about 10-11mm??

And the bottom of the rim to wheel arch measurement is 765mm unladen, only 1 tank full (just had the 90L light come on), note, when the camper is hitched up I lose about 65-70mm

MMR going by the ride height my Toughdog rear springs are pretty much the same as the new OME I put in. Maybe even a little stronger. Shocks will be as per 120k usage no doubt but will have a 30 or 40k left in them but so should your existing OME shocks unless they have been knocked around. I was not planning on upgrading my suspension before I sold the car in a year or so. Front springs HAD sagged. Down about 15mm from the height they had settled at. PM me an address and I can bring the Prado around over the weekend and you can check out the rear height on mine with the 896s. My front with the Toughdogs was 790 and sagged to 775 before fitting OME which now sits at 810 and hopefully will drop a bit more after some 4wding. Rear was 835 and still 835 before changing the springs and is now 825/830 ish depending on the pressure in the polyairs. I have bumped that up to 8psi currently.

Because I had the wrong springs fitted to the rear (895s) I almost, and I mean almost put the Toughdog springs back in. To do rear springs only takes a couple of hours with a trolley jack and decent stands. It was only the warranty it now had with the OME gear that made me change them out for the 896s.

You haven't posted what your front height is so not sure where to go there and if it is less than 775mm and the front struts are compatible with the Toughdog springs then changing those springs for the OME would be an interim measure. Maybe a year or so, though if you only have an alloy bar you will get more height out of these springs. As for the rears I would suggest getting a polyair kit (I am biassed) for about $275/300 and then changing out the springs for my Toughdogs and fitting the polyairs. Whether you use the Toughdog adjustables or keep the OME shocks is up to you and the condition of the OME shocks.

I reckon this is your best $ option. Going for a full replacement of suspension buys you warranty too though so you need to weigh that up given you are about to head off on a lap. I can look up the cost of my recent fit out and let you know what that was. Where are you getting prices and are they fitted prices?

Anyway pm me a phone number and I am happy to catch up with you over the weekend.

                    Michael

PP doesn't get any better than this thread!

I reckon if are planning on doing a hot lap MMR then these springs will be an interim measure, but given you are heading on a trip soon and are short on funds, I would be taking up the offers being put on the table.

I've PM'd John and Michael but just to keep the thread going:

After a bunch more phone calls (prices are coming down) and discussions with the Mrs we have decided to just bite the bullet and get a full new kit done. She likes the idea of the warranty etc etc and whilst I think taking up these extremely generous offers is the way to go for an interim fix, we are going to try and customise the kit to our needs, go with airbags and hope to only have to do this once to get us what we need now suitable before the trip, during the trip, and then after.

I am just astonished at the responses I received. Time to order PP stickers me thinks
