  • North point fail, can't find the rattle.

So I am starting to think that the service guys at north point toyota are all apprentices or they just like replacing parts under warranty.

My recently aquired 120 came with the standard 3 month 5000km warranty. Since the test drive I noticed the rattle in the front end (that my wife describes as the fat persons after wobble) during the test drive and was noted to be fixed as part of the warranty. So after day 12 they rang me and told me that they have replaced the steering rack, the bushes on the shockers and something else and still haven't been able to stop the rattle. They now believe that they have narrowed it down to stabaliser bushes.

Are there any parts left for them to replace or have they done nearly a whole new front suspension for me???

    Cheers

Does it sound as though the noise is coming from the steering wheel/column area? Only noticeable on middle to larger size bumps and potholes? That's where my rattle(wobble) comes from. Reading on PP, it's a clip somewhere in the steering column that needs replacing.

Someone else may be able to find and attach the link for you to get a better description of the problem and the fix. That way you'll be able to tell the guys at Northpoint exactly what they need to do.

Cheers guys thanks for the thread. Will give toyota a ring tomorrow so they can look into it while they wait two days for a part from Melbourne.

Finally got he car back today (14 days later) and the first bit of a drive was really nice and then I hit the first pothole and straightaway knew that they haven't found the problem so when I get a chance I will get under it to find what they have replaced and to see if the steering column might be the issue.

Jack it up & check for play in the wheel bearings.
This will give the noise you described also.

              Regards, Jason.

So my wife picked up the prado after it spent yesterday at northpoint again. So when it went in we were told they were going to have another go at the rattle and find out why the engine light was now on.
They rang yesterday and said it was ready to picked up as it was fixed. When my wife got it they said the faulty item wasn't warrantable and the engine light was for a crankshaft sensor.
I went back there after work as the engine light was back on and tell them that this issue was warrantable as it was steering related. I told the service manager what the problem was and he said they had no record of that problem. They also gave us the run sheet and there was no mention of the parts they had changed. Everything else was noted but not the suspension issues. I nearly lost it at the guy. How can you have it for three weeks with no mention of the parts you have changed. He insisted that the problem I had described to him was never mentioned to any toyota staff. Totally bullshit as I told him about the problem over the phone last week.
So he begrudgingly made another appointment after saying we will get the raa on to it as they set the rules on warranty/safety issues. This is looking like it is going to be a dog fight and I will not give up and roll over.

Sorry for the rant. Getting tired of this shit

Hopefully you get it sorted this time. Makes you wonder how they expect people to keep coming back when the service you get isn't up to scratch.

So my understanding that it is under a used car warranty? is that right
Rattles and squeaks are not covered even under new car warranty , unless the rattle is a failed part that is causing it and even then under used car warranty it isn't automatically covered due to normal wear and tear and what the item is
Sound to me like they are doing all this work under good will from you asking for the rattle to be fixed when bought it
Have you driven it with a tech to demonstrate the fault?

the problem is the right front wheel leaves the road so to me that is a safety issue. When the tire tries to regain grip is when the rattle occurs. My wife was taken on a bullshit thrash around some back streets to try and recreate it but the "technician" was unable to as he was not listening to her about when the fault presented it self. Another appointment is scheduled with "the right technician" for monday.

What i meant by a road test is for you to drive it with the tech and demonstrate it
Also you said at the start it has a rattle in the front end they cant find , now you say the front wheel recontacts the ground it rattles , i think it definitely needs a road test with yourself driving to show the fault as i wouldn't expect any of my guys to road test a car to the point that a wheel will come off the ground
How is the wheel coming off the ground with normal driving?

fair call. The wheel comes of the ground when going around right hand corners at speed and when ever it hit a pothole which is never too far away here in Adelaide.

OK the only way a wheel will come off the ground like that is from a seizing shockie the noise will be from the poor cv trying catch up when it hits the ground again
