  • Bent trailing arm

    Hi all,
    I was under the prado this arvo doing an oil change and noticed that one trailing arm(drivers side) has a slight bend in it while the other is dead straight. So here come the stupid questions....

    It's meant to be straight right?
    Can I take it off and straighten it out and put it back or should a put a new set in?
    Any special tricks in removing?
    Any new ones recommended? have an ome 50mm lift.
    Will this bend put the rear axle out alignment!

    Thanks
    Simon

    Hey Simon,

    The factory rear lower and upper trailing arms are meant to be straight.

    I'm guessing you've bent one of the lower arms?

    You can take it off and straighten it back out, but I personally wouldn't do this, as the pipe will be weaker where it's bent.

    The arms are pretty easy to remove, no need to jack the car up, just chock the rear wheels so the diff can't roll around, and do one side at a time. Some guys use straps when they do this on the ground, but you should be ok if the wheels are well chocked.

    Yep your diff will be out of alignment if an arm is bent out of it's normally straight position, sort it asap.

    If you want to get some beefier replacement arms, Roadsafe sell some sturdy straight arms, see p10 of the Roadsafe catalog, $300/pair;

    Superior Engineering also sell some even stronger offset arms;

    Both the Roadsafe and Superior arms will benefit your 50mm ome lift, and will tighten up the rear of the car, and the bushes will even flex a bit more.

    Best of luck getting it sorted!
