  • GVM upgrade on 120 Prado in SA

I have just successfully been through a process which has allowed me to increase the GVM of my 120 from 2900kg to 3090kg.(+190kg)
It took about 2 weeks from start to finish - I did not have to replace any parts as I already had uprated springs & shocks (TJM heavy duty Gold)
My car did not have to go to Regency and was inspected by the Engineer who issued me a transport SA blue plate!

The figure is derived from the sum of both axle weights. I have no intention of carrying any more weight (with the exception of a rear bar)
but this is to allow me some margin should I get stopped by the roadside. A customer of mine recently had $1200 fine for excessive ballweight.
So weighing of 4x4s does take place!

    Which engineer and cost?
What about the towing capacity and GCM?

$495 - was quoted $2-2500 by another engineer who wanted to hire Gawler Airport and load car with sandbags to do lane change testing.

Towing capacity remains the same unless vehicle is at new GVM then it reduces by 190kg as GCM cannot be increased as discussed here once or twice.
Tonkin Consulting 66 Rundle Road Kent Town. He also did an older 200 series whilst I was there but that got another 280kg!

Is the increase just a sum of the current factory front and rear axle weights?

It is but still a useful 190kg! With my Prado I can now take me & 4 friends out and not exceed my GVM as unladen with fuel it weighs 2552kg!

Tried to have mine done down in VIC. I have heavy duty suspension all round but was told that i needed to change out the complete rear end to gain a whole 100kg.

Find out who certifies the GVM upgrades locally for the likes of Pedders and Lovells and approach that engineer - thats what I did! You need someone who knows what they are talking about!
