My Prado also does this... although not very often... It only does it when in low range and going down a steep hill over uneven ground. It feels as though there is some play in the steering when the wheels move (from uneven ground) and you're holding the steering wheel firm you can feel some play and a kind of knock.

I'll just add it to my list of "to be fixed" for toyota.

Got the Prado back from the Toyota Dealer today after them having it for 3 days. They replaced the steering column assembly (part no. ST J702). Toyota came to the party and split the cost 50:50. (the warranty expired 11 months ago) The result is the rattle/clunk and vagueness in the steering is gone and the Prado is tracking as good as new.

              Re: Clunk/rattle/knock through steering wheel?

I had a similar problem, It felt like the steering column was loose and you could feel a clunk through the steering wheel over every little bump or corrugation.
There are 3 shafts in the steering column and two of them have uni joints in there, its hard to tell on the car which one may be flogged out becuase they are joined together. I replaced the shaft to the rack and the clunk has gone. No much fun doing it , the spline was seized onto the rack so i drenched it in CRC for a day and used a big hammer prybar to knock it off, its in a very awkward spot. The p/number I used was 4520335320.
I am trying to post a picture but it doesnt seem to be working ( Im new at this )

                Re: Clunk/rattle/knock through steering wheel?

I also still have this problem. Changing out suspension does not fix it.

I'll be taking it up with my mechanic, but I have a grave fear it is gonna cost me big time, I dunno whether Toyota will help at all...

                  Re: Clunk/rattle/knock through steering wheel?

i think the noise is just coming from the intermediate shaft in the steering. the only problem is its very hard to single out which one of the universal joint is making the noise. in that case in replacing parts i would do the cheapest ones first. hopefully we can gather as much info on this problem..

                  thanks

                    Re: Clunk/rattle/knock through steering wheel?

Have my Prado booked in for next Wednesday (not with Toyota dealer) with specific attention being paid to this issue. Will report back once I get it looked at.

I hope its just a few bushes or something, and not the whole steering column assembly. For those that have replaced parts of the steering column assembly, can you post a few costs so others can know what they MAY be up for?

                      Re: Clunk/rattle/knock through steering wheel?

The steering column comes in 3 pieces. The lower shaft has one unit joint on it that may be u/s. The intermediate shaft has a uni joint and a rubber coupling that could be the issue.
Depending on your negotiating skills the lower shaft is around the $300 mark and the intermediate shaft is a couple of bucks cheaper. Labour could be the issue coz there not much fun to do. Good luck

                          Re: Clunk/rattle/knock through steering wheel?

Well.. got the Prado back from the mechanic and he checked over the steering system and couldn't find anything wrong. He, and I, didn't want to just go replacing parts for the sake of it either.

I may take it to a steering specialist if I can't figure it out.

Is there a specific test to check the uni joints in the steering column?

Toyota's fix just seems to be to replace the lot, which is expensive considering its out of warranty.

                            Madcore,

Can you please continue to keep us updated. I have the exact same problem.

The clunk noise started when I hit a water run out on the beach of Fraser Island. The vehicle bottomed out and put a decent dent in the brown davis bash plate.

When we got back to the mainland, I got a wheel alignment that improved the knock considerably. We then drove to Melbourne over the next week or so. The cluck seemed to get worse with a bit if shudder. I then took my Prado to Toyota to look at and they aligned the wheels again and they were way out. I do not know whyt the alignment moved so much in that short period???

Anyway, I will see what you can diagnose and will take it from there.

                            Nath.

This problem seems to be more and more prevalent.

I am sure someone with much more mechanical expertise than me will be able to answer you Nath but for your wheel alignment to be out like that, seems like something must be amiss.

                                Re: Clunk/rattle/knock through steering wheel?

Becuase the two shafts are bolted together it would be hard to diagnose without seperating them.
The only way would be to take them off oand move them around in your hand, you probably wont feel much movement in them. I had both shafts but i only fitted the lower one because it had slight movement in it. I wasnt 100 % confident it would fix it but it did, Its like a brand new car now.
The knock I had felt like the hold steering column was loose, I could feel it over the slightest bumps.
