  • Front suspension above 770mm

    Hey guys,

I'm currently trying to find out whether going above 770mm at the front will affect drivability and also cause premature wear on drive componets.

I've got ATS ridepro kit and it sits at 765-770mm on top circlip position. As Darren has designed this kit to sit at 770mm there is no more adjustment to go higher other than having an extra groove machined into the shock or to add spacers (not interested in going this path).

I'm looking to go an extra 20mm which is all I want to go and is the maximum I can go with the billies (by measuring the droop) according to Darren.

I have been advised that going higher than the current height, drivability will suffer and can also cause damage to the cv joints.

Can any of you guys with suspension measurements higher than 770mm give me some feed back on the above issues, if you've had cv problems and if driveability is affected?

    Cheers,

    Crammy

    Crammy,
I am running at around 790 at the front and haven't had any issues, although I have only done around 30k.

    Cheers,

      Thanks for the info Kev..

I know there's quite a few guys out there running above the 770mm mark so I'd love to hear from you!

          Crammy,

It still puzzles me why you've got only 770mm with the circlip in the TOP position. Whereas I've got 770mm with the clip in the centre position :? :?

You've done a CV joint though mate... Not saying it's from the height as I know first hand how hard you drive it!! haha

            Hey Dustie,

I've got a dirty big 10,000 pound winch sitting up the front which doesn't help. I think it weighs 38kgs plus the weight of the cable...

I have been in discussions with darren and there was some concerns with the springs but I'm not so sure they are sagging as they're not really dropping, although everytime I measure it I seem to get something different higher and lower!! (drugs??) They do seem to sit a tad lower after the cape trip though, but only roughly 5mm. (was carrying a lot of weight on some rough terrain)

Most of the other kits around the place sit up around the 790mm (average) mark so I can't see any issues. Just that I was talking to a fella from fulcrum who wasn't overly keen on the idea of bringing it up 20mm. The cost was also a bit outrageous too!!

I think the others got 790mm because they use Lovell springs. From memory Darren mentioned the testing/QA on current Lovell springs is not upto his standards whereas the Ridepro's stress test each spring. I suppose the comprise is 20mm

Surely the stress test doesn't drop 20mm off the springs??? If it does, you would think they would make them taller to compensate?

I thought they stretched and then recompressed the ridepros to mimimize the initial settling period where the springs sag a little?

                I dunno ya know.. :?

Ah and for drugs... just kidding mate... I'm as clean as an olympic athlete  hehe

                        Na mate,

Same as you. Bilsteins and Ridepros..

Pretty happy my second battery only cost me under 2mm.. :P

                        Cheers,
 Surely something must be different... Maybe they're a different part number or something? Most of the guys that have recently got this kit are at 770mm. I'm guessing something has changed with the new kits?

I get confused at the best of times, but I've been given info on these setups (ridepro/bilsteins & fulcrum dude with damage to higher than 770mm) a lot of which contradicts itself with measurements given on this site.

I was led to beleive that the billies have a maximum allowable droop of between 60 & 50mm both from different sources. 60mm droop in my rig would bring it up to 790mm. Surely the droop wouldn't vary from Prado to Prado too much? Some guys such as yourself Matt are at 808mm? By what I have been told this height would top the shock out... Then again maybe it's a different part number? Stuffed if I know! All I know is that I'm happy with the ride, it just needs to be 20mm higher at the front.

The ATS kit sounds like it's had some revisions in it's time, it would be interesting to see why it's dropped down to 770mm.

                            Matt,

The springs on your rig is Blue (as per the other post), right? I got the ridepros and they are black. From the ones I have seen Lovells are blue colour springs.

When I inquired from Darren before installing the ATS kit, he said 770-780mm at front and I've got 770mm. You got 795mm as per the other post with the circlip at bottom? This is too hard and confusing...... :?

The guy whom you introduced sometime ago had Kings springs (think he moved to Canada, forget his name) got around the 790mm, from memory.

                            :? :? :? :?

Dustie I rekon the quoted 780mm height would be with an alloy bar? The steelies weigh quite a bit more than the alloy.

Matt this is your car eh? (from suspension measurements thread)

Thats a great lift there! You wouldn't have to jack it up very far to get the wheels off the ground!
