  • bilstiens or konis shocks

Like any discussion on tyres, I just want to throw it out there and see what everyones got to say (rather than my character being assinated!).

Got a reasonable budget, subsequently both bilsteins and konis are my short list (settled on King Springs)... spending 3 months in the Kimberley in July... so it is time to change over (for all those trying to stir the pot OME have missed the cut).

    Thanks!

It's booked in to get the Koni 82s fitted Monday (if anyone is checking the profile)...

      Koni's are good.

I used to run them in my cars when Bastien was working for Topperformance in Melbourne. He was a wizard. Unfortunately, he retired and I moved interstate anyway, never found anyone like him again. The Cars have got KW in them now, and the Prado has just grown Bilsteins.

If we convince you that the Bilsteins are better, will you cancel the install?

      Good luck with it.

If it helps, looking to get a new set of tyres at the same time (ha ha ha)

Genuinely interested in thoughts on suspension choices. Looking for a good healthy discussion.

Bilstiens have been done to death on here... they are considered to be one of the best shocks for the 120 by many on here and are discussed in numerous threads.

Konis are also mentioned in several threads....including a write up by wildmangordo.

Just because there's no Billies vs Konis thread doesn't mean the info on each is not in other threads.

The search engine isn't fantastic but here's what I found:

For what it is worth I think the Bilsteins with my 2inch lift are great on my new rig. Both highway and off-road performance are way better than my 98 GXL 90 series which has 2inch OME lift with Toughdog adjustables. Smooth and surefooted.

All I am hearing these days if I say "I have the budget if it is worth it" are Koni or Bilstein (and Fox for the hardcore :-) and for springs: Kings and Lovell.

RE OME: Bit surprised how infrequently they are recommended (i have only been 4wding for 6 months and listening to everyone for 18 months) when you think about the distributor, ARB which backs them. It is just not being recommended nearly as much as 2 or 3 years ago (and all that has really changed is where the product is manufactured, so I put it down to that).

OK, Bilsteins over Tough Dog I get... but why not the Konis... Bilsteins I understand, as a monococ shock, have a potential stone damage issue (if stone guards are not installed)... did you fit stone guards? I'm going to the Kimberley (via Marree, Oodnadatta, Tanami, middle of boon docks etc) in July (for 3 months) and stone damage is a serious consideration.

Why did you knock Koni's off your list (either 82s or the 88/90 set up)?... seriously the finance committee will approve 88/90s, but saving up brownie points and looking at the 82s.

A lot of this comes down to shock design (monotube vs twin tube) and your needs:

                              See shocks FAQ HERE:
