  • OME/IRONMAN BULLBAR PROBLEMS

I have just had an Ironman bullbar fitted to my 120 Prado and I am very unhappy

With the bulbar on (dirt or tar):
    1. There is a heavy rattleling noise from the bulbar. I have tightened the crome top piece but the noise is still heard with windows closed.
    2. Every time I go over a bump I feel and hear a loud thud resulting that I cant travel more than 30km/hour on a dirt road or over bumps on tar.
    3. Steering is much heavier than before, to such an extent that I had my power steering checked as I thought it was faulty
    4. The bar moves up and down. Not a little but allot. When you driving it seems as if the bar is moving up and down 20mm

With the bulbar off (dirt or tar):
No rattles, thuds or noise. Power steering back to normal and I can travel as fast as I like on dirt roads.

I have had the reps from ironman with me and they are trying to sort the problem out. They have been extremely helpful to me.
I was told that I need to replace or upgrade my shocks at a cost of R18 000
I currently have OME Medium all round. I have also adjusted the tyre pressures from 1.8bar to 2.5 bar with no difference in the performance.

I am going to refit the bar today as the fitment centre did not fit the bar properly (but I don't think this is the cause of the problem). If it persists, I will have to put the standard bumper back and will loose R16000 in school fees (surely this cant be happening)

I test drove a prado with an onka bar on and there was no noise or movement of the bar and the prado handled like a dream

Has anyone experienced this, your comments/thoughts are very welcome

    1. There is a heavy rattleling noise from the bulbar. I have tightened the crome top piece but the noise is still heard with windows closed.
Some things to check for are: loose fog lights (if fitted) and A/C line hitting (can just be bent out the way) Loose wing plates or radiator protection plate.

    2. Every time I go over a bump I feel and hear a loud thud resulting that I cant travel more than 30km/hour on a dirt road or over bumps on tar.
Have you allowed a 20-25mm gap between the body work and b.bar?

    3. Steering is much heavier than before, to such an extent that I had my power steering checked as I thought it was faulty
Adding weight over the front is always going to effect the steering some what.

    4. The bar moves up and down. Not a little but allot. When you driving it seems as if the bar is moving up and down 20mm
Normal for Prados (Both 120 and 150, also 100 series IFS cruiser is known for it), it's and illusion caused by the very soft body mounts (ie; it's the body moving around on the chassis)

          Re: OME/IRONMAN BULLBAR PROBLEMS

          Hey,

I have just over 2 mths ago got an Ironman Protector Bullbar with winch put onto my 120 series Prado. Since getting it on we have had a continuous rattle in the front end too. First we got an Ironma 2inch lift on the car front and back.We have had the front bushes replaced as they had worn with the weight of the bullbar. With all that done we still have the noise.
Took it back to the shop they tightened everything up and said that would be it, nope!!!!
Now they are just doing a guessing game and telling us now that it might be the front drive shaft. So basically we have to spend all this money on the car as they cant come up with an answer.
As much as the bullbar looks great on the car, it has been nothing but nightmares and the wife is going off her head with the noise!!!! Don't blame her as there was nothing before all this was put on

            Re: OME/IRONMAN BULLBAR PROBLEMS

I found with my ARB deluxe bullbar that the plastic part of the wheel arch (not sure what you'd call it) at the front that went from the car body to the bullbar, where it was fixed with cable ties hadn't been trimmed back far enough. As a result, when on dirt roads, corregations or turning into the driveway - there were loud clunks coming from the front drivers side.

Suffice to say that it actually wore the powder coat finish from parts of the bullbar...

Sounded like the shokers were rooted and about to break clean off the car - a little trim and a few cable ties later? Quiet as a mouse!!!!

Ha ha love this! If it can not be fixed with duct tape and cable ties it can not be fixed. Lol

It wasn't the shockers that got the trim Troy - for the record!!

In my defence there Troy, I had it in for a suspension check twice and was told that the suspension was fine and that it's probably the bullbar loose. So I checked the bolts on the bullbar, no success...
Decided I'd just start removing bits and took the car for a spin everytime a piece came off - eventually the sound stopped. Then just a matter of figuring out why the removal of the last piece stopped the sound...

It was in the end just a piece of plastic for the wheel arch attached to the body, hitting a piece of metal on the bullbar due to the soft body mounts.

Seems similar to what ben is experiencing, although I have no idea about the Ironman bullbars, but its inline with Mick's idea of checking clearances between body and bullbar!!!

Matt, if you still have the standard shocks and springs then rip off the cable ties and tell your wife the only way to fix is to replace with an aftermarket kit and that it will require new springs as well to fix the sag
