The rolling diametre of the 275/65/17 is exactly 13 mm each way to a 265/70/17 or 265/65/17 I run one as my spare ( Bridgstone 275/65/17 ), the other 4 are 265/70/17s, 13 mm is apparently close enough to be able to run, not that I have had a flat yet :wink:

I considered fitting 245/70/17 tyres to my new GXL D4D, but after confirmation from vicroads that its ok to fit 265/70/17 cooper ST's i decided to go with the larger size.

How's it work if your prado is pre 2007 and the tyre placard won't have the 275/65/17 on it. Might be legal but the insurance Co might not recognise it. Worth triple checking, getting in writing, etc from Insurance Co because if you have a claim, they are the ones who you need to pay up... not the RTA/VicRoads/etc.

Unfortunately not.
Unfortunately, Darren, that is not the case the way the RTA has currently published rules.
The NSW RTA publishes this Vehicle Standards Information bulletin (VSI) - VSI06 (dated November 2007) - which refers to the new ADR and has certain further requirements for other vehicle modification including tyres and wheels. Refer to page 4 of the above VSI and you'll see this:
Wheels and tyres
Refer to VSI No.9 Guidelines for alternative wheels and tyres.
This separate VSI (VSI09 - titled "Guidelines for alternative wheels and tyres" and dated SEP 2003 :shock: ) - states:
"Minor changes to wheels
Wheels up to 26mm wider than the largest optional wheel recommended by the vehicle manufacturer for the vehicle can be fitted without the need to notify the RTA.
The outside diameter of the wheel and tyre combination must be no more than 15mm over the largest diameter wheel and tyre combination specified for the vehicle and not more than 15mm below the smallest diameter wheel and tyre combination specified for the vehicle."
It then goes on to say that:
"Replacement wheels requiring an engineering certificate
Wheels that exceed the diameter and width limits for minor wheel changes must be assessed by a signatory. If the signatory finds that the wheels are safe for your vehicle, you will be issued with an engineering certificate"
My guess is that if they were going to enact the whole ADR like they should have, it would have been done in November, as opposed to enacting the majority of it (with minor changes), and publishing one or two VERY notable exceptions.
Like so many here in NSW I'm disappointed at the present outcome with the RTA. What is even worse is that there are a lot of people (including 3 guys in tyre shops yesterday that tried to sell me 265/70/r17 tyres) that don't know (or aren't willing to tell you) what is and isn't technically legal.
At least by the discussions here, people are able to make informed choices, and decide the risk vs the reward that they are able to accept. And, as someone said in another thread, just because you can insure a car, doesn't make it legal. In fact, by having an "illegal" car, your insurance could technically be void, even if they've put it on the insurance as a modification.
I'll get off my soapbox now. Hope the above clarifies some of the issues being discussed. I thought buying tyres would be one of the easier decisions for my Prado.... :roll:

So the long and short of it in NSW seems to be - if you can find an engineer to sign off on 70 series tryres (and you pay your money), then you're OK.
If that is the case, sounds like a bloody rort... :evil:
Anyone know what the going rate is for the certificate in NSW? Is there a set fee or is it whatever you can negotiate?
