  • What a good road tyre ?

Chase a good handling road tyre (we do 97% road 3% dirt roads) . I have seen some prado's wearing 19's & 20 inch rims ?? Should I spend the money ? Or can I get a good tyre in 17's

    cheers

    Mick,

The 65 series tyres on the 17 are a fairly low sidewall so you should be able to find a decent tyre in that size, that is unless you want a racer machine - in which case I'd prolly suggest another vehicle!

As Drew says, it depends on what you're after - if you are looking for the "rubber band wrapped around the rim" look, then go the 20's. However, you'll find the ride will be harsher and the tyres will not be as compliant or puncture-resistant off-road.

If you spend some time looking at theh various tyre threads here, you'll find that the consensus is generally that the D694 in OEM size is a very capable road tyre (particularly in the wet) as well as a very handy tyre on most off-road surfaces.

there was a post a while back, think it was in electrical, with a prado that had be blinged up beyond belief, with speakers everywhere. had at least 20" rims.. looked pretty sweet! no way in hell i'd go anywhere near gravel with rims that cost that much though! i'll stick to my stock ones where i'm not scared of branches and assorted crap in the bottom of mud holes!

          Mick,
If it's looks & highway grip you want I would suggest 265/50x20 Pirelli Scorpion STR's . But be careful rims & tyre package would be expensive & pron to rim & tyre damage on large potholes.
Also they would hard to come by if you did damage one.

Personally I would not spend the money, but it would be different.

I would stick with the 17's and have a look at a Bridgestone or Pirelli HT pattern, remember you are driving a four whee drive and not a sports car, Going to 20 inch will look great and the tires would grip fantastic but you still only have the handling of an off road vehicle so unless you are going to stiffen up the suspension the only benefit of bigger wheels will be looks!!

{Flame Suit On} I found the standard GrandTreks a good road tyre, seriously lacking in off road stuff, but 3% dirt? The only thing is some people report that they wear out quickly. Spend your money on fuel, not bling.

My Cooper 265/70/17 ATR's have been very good and they are surprisingly good off road for an AT style tyre.

I wouldn't worry about larger rims etc, even with 20" rims it will still handle like a 4x4.

                Paul.

                Just my 2 cents...

(Just borrow your flame suit Blokeman) I have to agree the grandtreks are very good on road, including in the wet and also on the sand.

No argument amount the Grandtreks on road (including in the wet)

Having fitted the D694's, they are just as nice on road, but also a far and away better all terrain tyre.

                      You asked for it.

But seriously I have kept my grandtreks. In the shed....

To build a flame barrier in case this happens again!

To be honest I wouldn't know what the GrandTreks are like as mine were on my 120 for less than 24 hours before I upgraded to the Coopers.

I am trying to kill my grantreks but after 55k there are still hanging in there, around another 10k to 15k to go. Then I will make a captial expenditure application to "she who must be obeyed" for new tyres of the varity I am not yet sure.

Keen to stick with 265/65/17s as is my insurance company AAMI.

Hmmmm, my Grandtreks have worn less than 2.5 mm and at 22,000k's have performed faultlessly on and off road much to my surprise
However I will be going to Coopers before our trip to the Cape.

Don't you just hate paperwork?! Thankfully, my little nest of vipers doesn't posses a great deal of financial savvy - so things go somewhat unnoticed on my 120! I think she'd notice when I start dishing up leftover porridge for dinner though.
