  • Dick Cepek(Mickey Thompson) FC II

    Hi all,

I am in the throws of replacing all the tyres on the Playdo. I want to go taller so 265/70/17 is what I am looking at.

I am tossing up between the ATZ 5 rib and the FC II. I am almost 90% sure I will get the FC II if they can get them without too much of a delay (3 weeks).

None of the outlets are prepared to discount so best price I have is $375 a corner.

Does anyone have any reports good or bad on the FC II's?

    Cheers

Bomber, havn't had the FCIIs but I know a few people who have had them and they loved them. They work surprisingly well for the odd tread pattern they have. You could also through the ATZ4 in instead of the ATZ5 if you want something a little more comparable to the FCII from the MT range.

      Hi bomber,
I had the FC11’s on my pootrole. I put them on in 2008 before I did a trip from Thargomindah to Broken hill via the Channel Country, The Simpson Desert and Flinders Ranges. In this trip I covered a fair variety of terrain. The FCII’s performed exceptionally well. When I sold the Patrol only a few months back the FCII’s still had more than 50% tread and have never had a puncture or sustained any damage. My only criticism of the FCII’s is that they are a little noisy on the black top compared with Yokahlomer Geolanders or the Dunlop AT.
      Regards Cyclone.

Hi Bomber, I have had the same experience price wise with Mickey Thompson tyres, seems as though most places are just quoting list price and are not willing to discount. Depending on where in Adelaide you are, Victor Harbor Discount Tyres may be wotrth a try, they quoted me $380 for the ATZ 4 rib (list price is $392)

Hey Bomber,I had FCII's on old 80 series and found them to be a decent tyre in all conditions,on and off road. The that bought the 80 was happy because he was going put a set on if it didn't have them on.

Thanks for the replies. I have decided this is the tyre I will run. Will order them tomorrow. Will also try and haggle a bit more off the price as I am purchasing 5. Bit of a wait, looking at 3 weeks, not as bad as the BFG AT's so I'm hearing.

Will provide some more feed back on how they are going.

              Hi Bomber,
I may have to be the exception to the others here. I had FCII on my prado on thought them the worst tyre I have had. They where fantastic in sand but on anything else where sub standard. Comming from BFG A/T they did not have the same grip in mud and rocks, even to the point that my wife, in the passenger seat commenting on how much they slipped on an area we had gone on a week before with worn BF's. I couldn't wait to get rid of them.
This is just one opinion and as you can see above, many are happy with them, but if your going to do some serious off roading then I would continue to look around.
              My two bobs worth.

Hey Bomber, I had FC11 on my patrol, Very unhappy with them. One trip to landcruiser park in Qld i found the the tread separated from the tyre. Took them back to where i purchased them and they were replaced with the MTZ's. (very Noisey) but great off road. I just put a set of Mickey thompson 4ribs 265 75 R17 on the prado - love them. Just did a 5000k trip up the qld coast various terrains handled very very well. I have had alot of 4x4s and been through alot of tyres and brands. BFGoodrich are good but expensive, at the moment value for money Mickey T would beat them hands down. I paid $329 each tyre. Hope this helps.

                Cheers

gday i had the fc11 on my old triton found them to be a good tyre as oposed to TFPRDO I did seem to do tracks easier then my mate with the BFG AT on a narvara dual cab in nearly all cases the only thing i found was after about 20000 k they started to become noisy on the road and less grip in wet and just before selling the car one had gone out of round. In saying that i did give those tyres a flogging.

Thanks for the feed back guys. I am still gonna give them a go. I will post updates on my thoughts as they wear.

I don't do a lot of 4wdriving at the moment but with the life we are getting out of tyres I want a tyre that will do most stuff with out having too hard a time of it. There is an article here that provides a little comparison between some brands that get a regular mention here, Maxxis, Coopers, Mickey T and BFG.

I am hoping that some of the poorer reports are just lemons in the construction process or they have revised their rubber compounds to deal with any faults previously reported.

I did also consider the new Cooper ST maxx but it is expensive and just a little to aggressive for what I want at this stage. Does look like a good tyre though.
