Does anyone know whether 17x6 steel rims off a 2005 GX will fit a 2007 (update) GXL without rubbing discs, calipers etc? I'm looking at using one for a second spare.

Yes, they'll be fine. Just make sure that you match the overall diameter on both sizes.
265/65R17 = 245/70R17
The GX was released with 225/70R17 tyres in the early models but they are considerably smaller (by 30mm) than the 2 sizes above.
You can also buy genuine 17x7.5" steelies from Toyota for a pretty good price. Then all wheels will be the same width.

Alternatively, I also bought a Speedy Grande alloy from Bob Jane for $165 as a second spare for the car, almost an exact match to the genuine Toyota wheels, you just need to use different nuts which are supplied with the wheels.Justin
