  • Fuel consumption with mud terrain tyres - 1kz turbo diesel

    Hello everyone,

Sorry if this has been covered else where i searched but couldnt find much.

In my previous vehicle i had a set of BFG KM2 mud terrain tyres, they was awseom to say the least although my fuel consumption went up about 4l per 100km.

I was just wondering what sort of fuel consumption increase everyone out there has got when changing to a mud terrain tyre. This info is to helo me decided what i am going to do about new tyres in the near future.

    Thankyou in advance Troy

How much larger in diameter were they. 4l per 100k's sounds way off.

what sort of economy are you getting now, im usually around 13ishl/100 with cooper st on and thats 50/50 hwy, thats normal driving not flogging or being a baby, i would say maybe .5 to 1 litre/100 difference certain not 4 with a 1kz. cheers samo

Hey guys thanks for your replys, my old vehicle had a 4l v6 and the diameter was very simular. I am currently getting an average of 12l per 100. Although the prado is standard in a few weeks time i got quiet a few goodies going on there so i am sure that will increase it a little with the extra weight. mmm might end up giving the new coopers ST maxx a go, :-)

          Howdy Troy
Have just recently put the new 265/70/17 ST Maxx on my 2007 TD Auto, honestly makes little difference to fuel economy, but at least my speedo is now correct. Have to agree with Samo on this one. Last trip back home from Adelaide loaded to the hilt roof rack full averaged 14L 100km @ 115km.

Hey thanks for your reply how are you finding the coopers, i like the idea of the aggressive AT more then a full MT tyre, I think the fuel will be a little better and will also probably get better wear. :-)

I have BFG AT - 275/65/17 - so not a mud tyre but a rather aggressive AT. With these larger tyres, roof platform & bars permanently on, bull bar, and a 2" HD lift, I am averaging around 13.3L/100KM around the city in my 2005 1KZ. I doubt mud tyres would be any worse. On the highway my usage can be slightly better or worse depending on whether I'm running head onto into winds etc - which seem to catch the roof platform a lot (you can feel it pulling).

Hope this helps your decision making...

Not sure if this is any help as I have a 90 series 1KZTE but I regularly get around 12L/100km on BFG muddies. My vehicle is an RV so the 265/75s take a bit of a toll due to the diff ratios, which means I have to use the right foot a little more to get up and going sometimes. I recently fitted a new set of KM2s and there has been no change in consumption.

I found the old BFG muddies altered the speedo by 7% when new, the new KM2s alter the speedo by 6%.

Love them and they look shit hot as well, did the Border Track with the SA PP boys n girls(GREAT W/E) and they went really well. As you say they are a bit more aggressive than normal but not like a dedicated muddie. As far as noise you can hear them but not too bad(have roof rack). Would definately reccomend them.
