  • Mixing Nitrogen and Regular air

Having finally replaced my tire, the shop filled them with Nitrogen because it was the only air they had! Given that this is not available in the desert where we frequently deflate the tires, is it best to take all of the Nitrogen out and re-inflate with regular air? The tire shop tech said that I should not mix both.

    Cheers.

Nah - Remember the air you and I breathe is 78% Nitrogen already...

Nitrogen in tyres is a con/waste of money for all but dedicated racing teams.

Nitrogen has no oxygen or should I say air from the atmosphere in it. Hence no moisture to expand when the tyre gets hot and changes your tyre pressures.
That’s why they use it in aircraft tyres. Mixing it with compressed air won’t be a problem for you or I because a couple of PSI difference won't mean much. I can explain it more at a later date.

they should have put helium, you'd be floating up in the air (good for $$)

Just make sure you replace the red valve caps with normal black ones so people don't know your tyre place tried to rip you off. No point in running nitrogen. At all. Nitrogen doens't run cooler it doesn't leak slower it doesn't do anything to justify even a 5c increase in cost.

Are you saying that the shop did not have a normal air compressor to put air in your tyres?

I am concerned you may try to release the nitrogen back into the air. Nitrogen oxidises when released into an oxygenated atmosphere creating Nitros Oxide which as we know is a highly volitile fuel!

                    Just kidding, sounds impressive though!
PS change your tyre man, that guy is a bigger #anker than me with my silly jokes.

Well, at least the tire shop did not make me pay extra for the Nitrogen, it was a free service Given that the tech's stupid answer did not make sense to me, I thought I would verify it with the folks on this forum. Appreciate your feedback. Having the green caps on looks very dorky, I took them off as soon as I got home

I hear you boss. Local tyre shop charged me $25-00 for the pleasure of having nitrogen in my new tyres - even though I had not requested it. Really ticked me off as I lost half of the damn stuff 1st time down the beach when I lowered my tyre pressures. Yeah - green caps does look a little naff. Cheers.
