Corrosion on Alloy Wheel

One of the alloy wheels of my 2007 D4D Prado has a high level of corrosion whereas there is no corrosion on the other 4 wheels. The anodised coating is bubbling and flaking off.

The corroded wheel was the spare for most of its life. The vehicle has never been driven through salt water or on the beach.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Not sure what the issue is Glenn but a few sets I have looked at on ebay have also had this problem ?? I thought it was because they have used the wheels on the beach or driven through salt water or lived on the coastal areas causing it and not washing them properly when they got home to remove any salt residue which is obviously not the case unless your vehicle lived/lives near the coast ?? Are you the original owner ?? If not was it near the coast when you bought it ?? You live in Brisbane I noticed any where near salt air ?? Its the spare so makes me think its copped the salt air and been the spare was it washed like the others were that are on all 4 corners ?? or is there a wheel cover on it and it really has never been washed at all so if near salt air the salty mist would work its way onto the rim and just sit there ?? It is a common and known problem, take it to your local stealer and push them for a replacement under the corrosion waranty.

Really, there's a corrosion warranty on alloy wheels? How long does that last? Has anyone been successful with that?

The alloys are colour painted inside the spokes and cleared overall. Paint/corrosion warranty applies.

You all may laugh but 20 years ago when I used to weld Magnas together for a crust Mitsubishi (and any other manufacturer) had to offer a 5 year corrosion gaurantee for any vehicles exported to the USA. It was a big deal when I worked on the prototypes for the USA export models.

I thought the corrosion warranty applies to sheetmetal parts. Not to the wheels.

My Toyota dealer has replied as follows:

" Unfortunately the 5 year corrosion warranty is for body panel perforation only so it does not cover the issue you have with your wheels."

BTW I have had the vehicle since new and it has been in a western suburb of Brisbane most of its life.

I will have to see if the statutory warranty covers wheels. Does anyone know how to implement this process, please?
