  • what sized tyres fit standard rims no lift

So I've got a 120 GXL with alloy's. I assume they are 16inch. Whats the largest tyre I can put on them and what are the implications? I'm looking at BFG AT's.

    cheers
    Jim

Your rims should be 17x7.5. The largest BFG AT tyre that will fit without a lift is 275/65/17
You will still get a slight rub at full articulation when turning, but it will just rub off the thin plastic splatter guards inside the front wheel wells.

      thanks mate,

Will the larger tyres noticeably impact on the speedo or torque etc ??

I have them on mine. Had them fitted a few thousand kms before getting new suspension (2" lift). There is absolutly no rubbing at all now. I should say though...... When I bought mine, the first thing I did was sell the alloys and fit steel wheels from a 2009 model GX. I think the steelies are the same offset as the alloys, but I am not 100% sure.

I find my speedo is almost 100% accurate now when compared to a gps.

Interesting blog... I'm still trying to get my head around this tyre size stuff. Has anyone out there fitted a set of Cooper AT3s in 265/70/17 on a 120 series? Any rubbing? Any major speedo error and is this actually legal?
Avoiding all eye contact I shamefully stare down at my muddy feet and softly announce... "My name is Dale and I am a 4WD accessories addict".

The diameter inceases by 26.5mm which makes it illegal in NSW I think. Not sure about other states. In NSW increase up to 15mm is legal from memory. Tread depth is probaly about 12mm when new so technically they would probably be legal when 2/3 worn.

Um.... I have made a big mistake here and am very sorry if I have caused anyone any issues.

Above I quoted the largest BFG AT to fit a non lifted 120 as being 265/70/17.
I was just pumping up my tyres and noticed they are in fact 275/65/17.
I have edited my post above.

              Sorry.

Technically, both 265/70R17 and 275/65R17 tyres are the largest you can fit without a lift depending on which dimension is considered to be the largest.

The 265/70R17 will have a larger diameter and slightly larger in width. The 275/65R17 will have a larger width and slightly larger diameter.
In most states, the 265/70R17 would be illegal. The 275/65R17 would be fine.

                  Hi,

On my 120 I'm running 265/70-17 in inches 31.9" seem to have room for bigger tyres.
This size has bought my speedo from 4% out to 100% accurate!!!
                  I want to go to 275/70 32.2" Or even 285/70 32.8"

Can anyone tell me if they have done this or similar?
                  Do they hit? Rub? Scrub?
                  Only want definitive answers please......
New vic laws allow up to 50mm bigger OD now!

Will 265/70/R17 BFG A/Ts go in with standard suspension and only a soverign bar? Will I need to go 265/65/R17 to avoid rubbing? I wouldn't mid getting a little more height out of tyres alone.

265/70R17 will be fine. Only a very slight rub on the UCA.

I'm getting a 2 inch lift on my 120 next week, I want to get sunraysia's and am thinking I'll get them in +10 offset, was going to just get 265/70's. Anyone reckon I'll get bigger on? Think I will get bfg muds.
                          Cheers, Josh

I have 265/70-17 muddies, still around 1/2 inch clearance to the UCA the only rubbing is when the mud builds up!
also they are no-where near the sov bar
it sounds like these are the biggest tyres anyone fits to the 120?

im in the process of trying bigger tyres, offset may make a small difference for roll factor, i recon it would be small, but when fully compressed your tyres might hit gaurds/flares? especially if you want to go bigger.
Im pretty sure 275/70-17 will fit, i will try them if 285/70 rub.....
it all depends on what tyre there is a lot of variance between manufacturers etc... look up actual heights of that tyre and section width and tread width..... thats what ive done.... now its give it a try.....
