I am interested in how these larger tyres affect your torque? I put on some 265x70x17 LT ATR Pirelli shortly after I bought my Prado (~60k ago) and have noticed towing a trailer that 1st and especially 2nd gear (D4D 6 speed) seem a bit tall and lacking some oomph! I hadnt thought until reading this thread that the larger tyres could be causing the problem? According to my calculations there is about ~1" rolling diameter difference in the std 265x65x17 Prado tyres and mine.…could that really be making the difference? Has anybody else with the 6speed D4D noticed this? I realise there may not that be that many vehicles out there with this manual diesel configuration? I also imagine its probably not an issue with the auto or petrol engines is it? I now need some new tyres and suspension lift/upgrade (it's amazing how much the standard suspension has sagged) and trying to decide what my best option is? Maybe I should chip it and put a massive exhaust on it.....haha, my son would love that! Lol

G'day BBB, I've got the same model prado as you (08 though) i'm running 265/65R17 BFG all terrain's and i reckon it's fairly punchy in the lower gears so perhaps your tyres are the problem. It's stock except for a snorkel and it has now done 175k injectors are original still goes well. Put it this way, i had a D4D manual hilux before the prado and the prado eats it for breakfast!
      Cheers.

BBB, I'm with azzss. Standard size 265/65/r17s BFG all terrains, 6sp manual and now running 3" Sterling exhaust. Before the exhaust it had plenty off get up and go, but now takes off like a rocket. Haven't put a performance chip in, but the bigger pipe on its own makes a big difference.

Haven't yet researched 3" exhausts and I'm sure there is heaps of info elsewhere on this forum regarding that but can I quickly ask you Smithy, what that cost you to fit and did it also affect your fuel consumption? Cheers,

I regularly swap between the 265/65R17 AT20 and 265/65R17 MT/R. I have the V6. There is definitely a difference with the performance as I can feel more punch when I go back to the AT20s.

The difference in diameter and construction of the tyre contributes to the 'punch'. Being a bigger tyre, you also have the weight further out from the hub which requires more energy to spin.

You would need to change the diff ratios to get the 'punch' back.

Hi BBB, I paid just under $1,100 for sterling exhaust, fitted. Runs right the way from the turbo back. It is claimed to increase power by 14KW (11%) and Torque by 60NM (14.6%), but without dyno testing, that is just heresay. Fuel consumption hasn't really changed much I don't think (though supposedly it should have improved, that would depend on how hard the car is driven). My average consumption is around 12.5lt per 100km at present (80% is driving around town) with roof cage creating extra drag.

              Hope this helps.

                Hey Smithy,
Is there much exhaust noise in the cab? ie drone?
                Cheers.

Not a lot. Does add a little bit of a note when pushing the power on (if you are listening for it). The build quality of the prado is so good, that most external noise is well insulated out anyway. Since we bought our car stock, I have added the BFG's (a little increased road noise, but not too bad given the aggressive tyre pattern), the ARB Alloy rack with wind deflector (a subtle bit of extra noise due to drag) and the exhaust and snorkel. SWMBO hasn't commented about any of these adding noise, but I guess we blokes pay a bit more attention to these things.

Personally I think the exhaust sounds tough, especially on sand dunes with the revs up!

Even 265/70 /17 is also illegal as you are only allowed 15 mm over standard and thas with a 2 inch lift

I tried.....285/70 hitting big time. Simply they are too big. You could change the offset but this will just change where they rub. I know there are some ppl with 33's.
In the end I didn't even bother trying 275..... Because its only gonna give 6mm more clearance than a 265/70-17 so i went with what I knew fitted!
                      Bigger tyres = less power
With 265/70 speedo is accurate, with anything bigger vehicle is unroadworthy due to speedo under reading which is not allowed.
                      Simple decision really.
                      Hope that helps.
