  • BFG - choice of tyre for SA GTG

Undoubtedly the most popular and most reliable tyre fitted to the Prados at the SA Get Together 2012 was the trusty BFG A/T. Only a handful of cars had other makes. One puncture occured on a Mickey T. Says something, doesn't it?

I reckon around 16 of the 36 vehicles that attended had BFG AT's, not quite 50% which is a big percentage compared to any other tyre. I have been dithering about what tyre to go for next time and I can't find a good reason to not stick with the BFG. My only other consideration was for the Micket T, but after seeing Dodgy Daves almost new MT suffer the worst damage of any tyre on the trip I don't think they are for me. And by worst damage I mean its knackered, completely.

    Cheers Andrew

      Bah-humbug!

You were seen with a Cooper ST on you front as a result you you rolling two rims, that would be on the same sand hill that saw none of my Coopers suffer the same fate and one of my two spares get you home

      I'm sold on the Coopers.

          Do I have too

Trying to scale a large soft dune I got a bit of air and a hard landing saw me get sand in the bead of both front tyres causing then to go flat. Rather than breaking the bead on the tracks I changed both tyres, only having one spare I borrowed one from MLC (oh the shame being seen with a cooper on my Prado)

Broke the bead on both tyres back at camp, removed the sand and all was good again.

Fuel consumption was up by 50% and there was a huge shudder in the steering as well as it pulled badly to the right with the cooper fitted. I also got pulled over by the cops and warned for travelling with dangerous tyres, once I told them I was putting the BFG back on asap they let me go

          Cheers Andrew

I think bfg a/t are probably one of the best cannot really fault them.
punture or a destroyed tyre is probably more unlucky?

do we have a picture of the damaged tyre?

I think the dune results prove without doubt that everyone could improve their vehicles ability by fitting silverstone muddies!

They seriously are tough tyres, but I accept some have an image to uphold...
                Cheers, Ben.

I think "All points considered" then the BFG A/T KO is the leading tyre to fit.
It might not be perfect for every thing, but as an "all rounder" it stands head and shoulders above the rest..

                      I drive a white Prado 120 with BFG/AT tyres.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

If only you had been pulled over!!!!
The Cooper had more tread than all of your tyres put together. AND we have done the same mileage
AND we all went airborne in Rev's ruts!

Lea was complaining of air sickness. (For the non attendees, she was jumping into every car that attempted the hill. Busier than a street walker on a Friday night!)
