  • Decent Offroad Tires for the 17x6 Steelies??

    Good Day,
As I’m awaiting my Prado Standard (D-4D Auto) delivery due next Month, I’m
Wondering if anyone knows of any decent off-road (all terrains to muddies) tires that could fit those 6.0Jx17 steel rims? I have searched this forum and the net, for a few weeks now, and I haven’t found anything. The Standard trim comes with the 225/70 R17 108S tires.
Surely there should be something serious available for skinies such as these?? Or will I definitely have to purchase the 7.5 wide or better wheels?

    Thanks
(P.S if you have Prado Standard already, please PM me)

    Rims

I think you will find your new car will have 7.5 X 17 steel wheels on it . Toyota stopped using the 6 X 17 rims a year or two back.

Thanks for the prompt reply guys,

Yes, the Prado “GX” has moved up to 7.5x17, but the Prado “Standard” does again come with the 6.0Jx17 steel wheels.
      http://www.toyota.com.au/toyota/vehicle ... 63,00.html
I didn't realize this a few months back, when I have put down the deposit for the “Standard”. Actually to this day I haven't seen a Prado “Standard” apart from the Toyota publicity shot (So if somebody here has one, I’d like to hear from them).

Also I did browse the manufacture websites (Goodyear, BFgoodrich, Dunlop) etc…
But so far the only AT Tyres I could find to fit the 6.0Jx17 rim were the Bridgestone’s 694.And I had them on my Jeep before, when my front MT/Rs blew up, and as I was far from home and was forced to buy them. I wasn’t too impressed, in particular with their wet road holding ability.

Anyway, Thanks for the advice, I’ll check out the prado 90 tyre forum as well.

You could do the Cooper ATR in 235/70/17 as this would be only a 15mm increase which is legal in all states.

          Cheers Hutch,
Finally a decent set that will fit!!! I had Coopers H/Ts before, and they were good quality!!

But later on I'll still get a half dozen 7.5x17s, so I can get hardcore STTs...

              Hi,
I have an 05 GX pardo with 17x6 rims without flares does anyone know where I could get some after market steel rims 17x7 that won't stick out passed the guards, or if the newer pardo 17x7.5 fit

                Hey Big D,
I have 245x70R17 cooper STT on 17x7.5 wheels... On prado standard which is also a flares-less.
Just the side wall of the tire sticks out a little bit, but i believe its the horizontal tread that has to be inside, and it is.... I belive it sticks out since it is a LT tyre, since the prado is plated for a non-LT 265/65R17 tyre, so if the cops say anything, i will point them to it...

                  Thanks Tomas79,
Thats great, I was hoping to fit the 245/70/17 ST coopers, I thought I would have to go 235/70/17 ATR coopers

                    Cool Big D,
To see how much the 245/70R17 on a 17x7.5 wheels stick out from the flaresless prado, check out the following Photos...

Re: Decent Offroad Tires for the 17x6 Steelies??

I have just tried about every search engine I can think off to find info on the King Wheels 17x7.5" rims and they dont exist as far as I can see.

I have also looked on the Tyrepower website and according to their rim calculator that particular size doesnt exist.

I eventually found the phone number and called King Wheels and they said that they only offer 17x8" which will make the 04 GX Prado illegal.

I was just wondering if you have made a mistake and can verify that yours are 17x7.5", because I am pushing the proverbial up hill trying to find a legal rim/tyre package to replace my skinny 17x6" rims that the 04 came with.

As you will be aware, the choice of tyres for the 17x6" rims is pretty poor.

Your combination looks good and I presume isnt illegal, so just wondering if you can help or clarify your combination sizes.

                      Cheers,

Re: Decent Offroad Tires for the 17x6 Steelies??

                        G'day Cruiser120,
Yep, i can verify they are 17x7.5s ....
They are speedy wheels "grande" actually.... http://www.speedywheels.com.au/catalogu ... alogue.pdf
I got my from tirepower, but they sell speedy wheels in most tyre/wheels shops around Perth/Australia...

As for legality, the sidewalls of the tire stick out a bit, but the actual top tread is still in the wheel well, which i understand is most important... Also the car is plated for 265/65r17(Driver side door) , so if a copp ever stops me, i'll show him the plate.... Also never had a problem, and around my neighbourhood there is a gx with even larger tyres....

Hope this helps, let me know how you go?

How are these tyres going ? Are you still happy with the size selection, knowing that you stayed within the legal size.

                          Cheers
                          They are allright PradoGxlv6,
A bit noisy, and the ride is harsher then the original dunlops...
But after having them for 12,000km got to say they seem quite slow wearing.... Even thought I haven't gotten around to rotating them yet... ops:
The off road grip is brilliant, as one would expect!

I think next time I might go to All-Terrains, and probably 265/70r17.... even though that might require a lift and aftermarket fenders...

                          Cheers

I need to get something in the next week and this is frustrating me like crazy.

There is not a single decent tyre out there for us. What's going on?
Sorry but with the way my cooper ATR's are delaminating  I don't call them decent.

I have been through probably 30 different ones by different manufacturers and can't find ANYTHING!

                              I want something chunkier than ATR's - that's all I'm asking for!

                              ...well, given up...I'm getting 7.5"'s
