  • Tyre / Tire Size and Suspension advice

    Hi Folks

I am looking at putting on a new set of AT on my 2005 Prado. Everything on the car at the moment is still factory.

The current tyres I have on the car are 265/65/r17

down the track I am looking to put some new springs and shocks on the car with a 2 inch lift.

I am looking at getting the Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 rib.

I don't know too much about tyre sizes, so was looking for some advice on what size tyre I can put on the car taking future mods into account etc. I was looking at LT265/70R17.

Also can anyone give me an idea of costs for new springs, shocks and lift? (in Australia)

    Cheers in advance

    Twalis

2 inch lift from ARB from memory cost me $1200 which didn't include fitting, fitting was going to cost an extra $200. I fitted it my self and wasn't that hard to do. 265/70/17 MTZ Baja is what I'm running at the moment and should fit ok with out the lift. Hope that helps you. Cheers Brett

G'day Twails, welcome to Pradopoint! 265/65/17 as you probably know is of course the recommended factory size tyre for a 120 Prado and there are quite a few AT / MT tyres to choose from. Like Brett, I am also running the 265/70/17's which are a great tyre and being a little taller also offers a little more clearance.
A few things to be aware of which may or may not concern you. Depending on the year of your vehicle and transmission type, your speedo will read different eg. My '04 4 speed Auto used to read spot on @ 100kmh, With the Mickey T's 100kmh on the speedo I am actually doing 106. Be aware that if you will most likely need to space out your spare tyre carrier on the rear door with either some washers and longer bolts or you can purchase an after market brackets such as what amts has for sale in the Market place. Also re the spare tyre, if you presently use the hard shell tyre cover, this will no longer fit with the larger diameter tyre. ( just need to Pre-empt the Mrs before brining the Prado home . ).
      A small price to pay....

By the way the MT ATZ 4 is now obsolete apart from old stock you may find around and has been replaced with an ATZp3 which looks pretty good. Haven't heard any reports on them as yet however...
There's oodles of good reading on various suspension setups in the 120 section to give you some great ideas. Enjoy your stay and when you get the chance, make yourself known in the Introductions thread and let us all know a little about yourself and your Prado...

      Cheers

275/70 R17 on the standard rim with a 2" lift. Will this fit without rubbing?

To add to this thread, for those that have 265/70/R17, obviously a larger tyre changes the gearing and fuel economy. For those that have done it, was it noticeable? I'm about to do the same thing with ours (except MT STZ's) and worried that it'll be slower off the mark and put more strain on something and break.
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

I done a lift and added 265/70 muddies at the same time so its hard to know what causes what, but I am using about 1.5 to 2 litres extra per 100km more than standard suspension and 265/65 all terrains. I have issues with the torque converter unlocking heading into a slight headwind. Car is an 03 petrol 4 speed auto.
