  • NEW BFG's on New Prado

    G'Day Crew,

As most of you are probably aware I recently replaced my written off prado with a new one. Had the dealer fit 5 new BF Goodrich AT's to it straight off.

Picked up the car and drove it home from Narellan to Picton. The alignment was WAY out, would not drive straight and the steering wheel was angled to one side by about 30 degrees ( I hate that).

Anyhow called the dealer the next day and explained to them the problem. They in turn called the tyre dealer who supplied the BFG's and they said it wasnt worth aligning until 5000Km

I then went to a "specialist" 4WD aligning company to have them professionaly aligned. I then drove the next day on the M5 and she felt washy on the road, light feel and constantly having to keep her straight, just didnt feel right.

Today I took it down to my local Beaurepaires. The manger and I went for a drive. He agreed it was not right. He suggested that one tyre may be heavier than the other so we swapped the two front tyres over to see if that would help............ nope.

He then put it on the hoist and checked the alignment. It wasnt even close!!! The camber was well out. He showed me that the retaining nuts have not ever been adjusted!

Basically fixed the problem and BINGO awesome, now drives straight, feels "heavier" and firm and the steering wheel is perfectly straight.

As they were very busy it took a couple of hours and a few test drives to get it sorted, that is alot of his time. I asked how much?

Nothing was his reply, he was just glad to have fixed my problem!

Customer for life I reckon. Seeing I have 2 new cars which I balance, rotate and align every 5000km plus replacement tyres as required, I hope that my business will help his business.

Great to see and a local bloke to boot.

    Regards,

    Rob

Great to hear you had a happy ending Rob. With the wrong sort of 'businessman' you could have been stung for a bundle.

What pressure are you running the BFG's at :?:

      Cheers,
      Jim

        G'Day Jim,

Running 38-40 psi on the blacktop and reduce as required on sand etc.

Big difference to the handling and feel already. Very Glad of the outcome.

In fact I am taking my Suzuki Swift tomorrow for them to do the whole deal.

        Regards,

        Rob

How do you rate the BFGs? I'm looking to swap tyres at delivery and leaning towards the BFG ATs. It will be used mainly for highway touring, both bitumen and dirt.

            blkmav90,

So far I have only done 700km in them, now that they are aligned etc properly I love them. Not noisy or harsh on the road. Wife did mention though that when she went through a large pool of water that you had to fight the steering (deeper channels on the tyres???)

I used to have Dueler 694's on an X-Trail and again they were a nice tyre, just more road noise in the x-trail..............

I dont think that you will be dissapointed, but keep in mind that the BFG tyre may be "illegal" in some states.............

            Regards,

            Rob

Paluka - I am, along with other PP members disappointed to see the comment you put up before it was moderated. (Thanks Moderators - good to see you are on the ball).

I read this before it was deleted and I thought wtf! It was totally out of line and you should darn well appologise to DarkHorse. If you are having a personal beef with each other then keep it personal it is poor form to air dirty laundry in public.

Thanks, sounds good as I want to keep the compliant ride and 265/70 are legal in VIC.

Well that is a different kettle of fish, I did not read it as a joke at the time either. Perhaps a well placed smiley would have changed the tone of the post.
