  • Maxxis Bighorn

Anyone got any experience and comments on the Maxxis Bighorn. I am looking for a set of muddies in the next few months for a trip to the tip (and for other reasons). I was originally looking at Cooper STT or Mickey Thompson MTZ but the price is rediculous. The Bighorns look like a good tyre at a more reasonable price and from what I have read have had a good rap.

    Any comment appreciated.

I used them on my patrol. Fantastic off and onroad. The only problem is thin side wall unless you get the ones with 10ply and you will only get 45-50k out of them. Bloody noisy after 5000k. Save the money and get yourself a set of MTZ for piece of mind.

I have been given figures 60 - 80 k from a set. In particular mentioning the sidewall protection. "Never heard of a staking".

At a saving of $100 a tyre it seems to be a good option.

Come for a drive in my patrol to experience the noise level. you will probably dislike it after a few ks.

                Hi Geoff,
I have a set of Maxxis Bravo, ATs.

The good: They perform very well in the light and moderate off-road conditions and in the wet. After almost 7000k there is little evidence of wear on the deep tread.

The bad: They are noisy on smooth bitumen. Annoyingly noisy :x On a rough bitumen surface they are fine, but on the smooth surface we have around town and on some freeways, they set up a perpetual and rather loud whine - I am thankful to Beethoven and a 6 stacker CD . From what Wengnuts says, it sounds like the Bighorns suffer the same limitations ...

I wonder if the MTZs are any quieter :?: Its a tough choice, hope it works out well for and you are happy with your choice.

The MTZ's are well worth the money.

I will replace this set with another and so on.

They are on my car all the time and while they are a little noisy... They are a mud tyre.

However they are exceptionally quiet considering other MT tyres i have been in other cars with.

They will get my money every time.

If and when i get a chance to get a second set of wheels i will put a set of ATZ on the alloys and the MTZ on the steelys.

They have won a loyal customer for as long as i have 4WD's
