Snow Chains

Wondering if anyone has fitted snow chains to the 120. I note in the manual that it recommends fitting the chains to the front, however if you have ever put you hand behind the front tyres and felt the close proximity of suspension components I doubt chains would fit.

Comments appreciated.

FYI, chains can not be fitted to the front wheels on the interpendant suspension models of both the Prado or the Landcruiser. Toyota Melb finally admitted on my third phone call that the advice in the manual will cause damage to suspension components.

I really dont know if these are any good , but they seem to make these in the size of 265/65/17.

If you get some let us know how they go...

I am heading down to the snow country in July and I am just wondering about using snow chains....

So what is the final verdict on chains - front, rear or both?

I know I'll need to carry them but it's been a while since I've been down there and the last vehicle I had was a 60 series landcruiser.

Unless the rules have changed since our last trip to the snow a couple of years ago it's not compulsary to carry chains in a 4wd. The RTA web site should have the info you need

It's always a good idea to put chains on the front of any 4wd if possible ,can't say of tried them on my Prado .
Amazing where you can go without them , I work regularly in snow country but rarely fit chains .

By law in NSW, 4wds still don't need to carry chains, but they are recommended if you don't have snow driving experience. NPWS, RTA and Police can direct any vehicle to fit chains if the conditions get bad enough. If you don't have them you wait. You can hire onroad chains at many places down there.

If the road conditions are so bad that a 4wd is required to fit chains to get to the resorts you wont be skiing as most of the lifts will be closed.

If you are going off road in snow country, you will need 'V ladder' chains if you have HT style tyres. Especially if you are doing any mud or still water crossings as they bite into the frozen stuff.

There are light weight on road 'roller' chains available that will fit the front wheels of the prado.

If you look at the latest instruction manual with the 08 models it states to fit chains to rear only

NSW you do not need to carry chains in 4wd vehicle
VIC chains must be carried regardless of vehicle type

Yep read the manual but had some contrary advice from some Toyota people.

I have spoken to Toyota and NRMA and it is the rear only, with the preference being for the diamond pattern chains.

In NSW the police, NPWS and rta can stop and direct ANY vehicle to fit chains if the conditions are bad enough. It does not matter if you are a 4wd or not, "no chains no go".

I have fitted chains to the front wheels of my prado that are designed for high performance vehicles with limited wheel room. In a bad english translation they are called roll ons, they self align and basically sit in the middle of the tyre. I got them in europe and have no idea who the manufacturer is 8).

When I put them on, people think they are not fitted right, but as you drive forward they self allign It pisses all those who have soggy bottoms :lol:

The closest thing they have available here is the RUD - Centrax

So the manual is right for me

Does anyone have an idea if you can fit snow chains to a 2010 Prado 150. My Prado has 265/65/18 BFG All terains fitted so I am concerned that the snow chains will not fit (slightly larger than OEM tyres). I note that the 120 Prado's snow chains should only be fitted to the rear. We are planning a trip to the Lesotho mountains in June/July and the need for snow chains might be a must.
