  • Jacto - How r the Grandtreks?

    Hi Jacto,

This may well have been better as a private message, but I am sure that others might be interested as well.

When I was making decisions about my Grandtreks, I found your posts incredibly helpful, and as an advocate of the Grandtreks, I was wondering how yours went.....and how long was it until you needed a rotation/alignment etc. Have you made the change yet? And what did you change to?

    Cheers!

    Hi Chrispy185

The Grandtreks are still going strong, currently at 56K and about half worn but there is some shoulder wear happening, which requires more frequent rotation (about every 5K). It is only recently that I have not been impressed with the tractionability and that was at Barrington at easter but in saying that it was a steep incline, wet as and others with far better tyres had problems also to the extent of winching. I have not had the vehicle wheel aligned yet but when I do it will be by a person that I have assessed as competent as a wheel aligner and using the very latest technology.

I am just tossing up between MTZ's and STT's in a light truck configuration and I am waiting as long as possible before fitting them as we are going to the Cape next year and I want as much tread as possible for the trip.

I am just trying to find out who the main importer/distributor is for them and then I am thinking of making some approaches on behalf of pradopoint members to see if I can squeeze some additional discount out of them (that is assuming members don't mind and it might be worthwhile running a poll to gauge acceptance). Moderators might need to set this up??

I really hate being told by every supplier the same price while freely admitting that they know it could be against the trade practices Act to fix the pricing at levels they are told to by the distributor and given that both Mickey Thompson and Cooper are made in the same factory (Cooper manufacture MT under licence) I would suggest that they are playing both sides of the fence at our expense.

Grandtreks?? well they are a very capable on road tyre providing they are looked after. I still go off road, drive for long distances at higher speeds, carry heavy loads and tow a 1500kg camper trailer but they suffer a lack of ability when the tread wears down and you need to go off road so hence the MTZ's or STT's. At the moment I can buy the MTZ's cheaper than Coopers and given that I believe the MT has better technology in the sidewall section of the tyre that might make the choice easier.

Don't know if it was what you were looking for and it is long winded but there you go
