  • New BFGs and steel wheels

Today I purchased new tyres for the Prado. As I have noted previously, I had Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armours which had about 3-4 mths wear left. With my trip to Innaminka, Birdsville & Oodnadatta in August, I thought it time to upgrade. I also plan to have the Goodyears swapped over to my camper-trailer so that I have matching tyres all round. Today I bit the bullet and bought 4 x BFG 265/70R17's at Tyre King, Baulkham Hills. Cost me $279 ea fitted, which was the best price I could find after ringing around. Also it seems they were the last BFG's in stock anywhere (apparently a shipment is overdue). I also bought 4 17 x 8 King steel wheels and had the Goodyears fitted to them, for the CT. Cost $105 ea.

The other advantage for me with the BFGs is that my spare is a new BFG, so I can now start a five-wheel rotation which should get me an extra 20% life on the tyres.

So far I have only driven each way on the M2 so can't comment yet on the tyres. I will be able to comment further in a few weeks.

Steel wheels in 17 x 8, that is what I am looking for. Are they made by King from King Springs, or is it another australian manufacturer? Never heard of these wheels before. Do you happen to know (or could you measure) the offset?

The offset is P30. They are made as a Prado replacement wheel.

          G'day Mal

Any particular reason that you switched from the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armours to the BFGs?

            George_M,

The only reason was price. I was quite happy with the Goodyears, but the best price I could get was $345 ea and I could not justify the price difference of $250 for the 4 tyres. I spent a lot of time reading up on different tyres, and even considered much cheaper tyres. For every bad story there will be a number of good stories about every tyre on the market. It came down to gut feel, plus the fact that I had a BFG spare which was virtually new. I'll know in 80,000kms (hopefully not too much sooner!!) if I made the right decision.
