  • Stock Prado (no lift) and MTZ's?

The Grandtrecks are just about to hit their use-by date (currently have 60k on them) and have been tempted to go for some Mickey Thompson MTZ's (the bloody brother in law bought them on his new Navara STX and they look and perform extremely well). Only problem that I can see (if I decide to go with these things) is that there might be a bit of rubbing against the front portion of the wheel arch as the rig is still running stock suspension/shocks.

Should I give the Prado a lift (2") before I decide to go with the MTZ's? How do they perform on the tarmac and in the wet?

In my own research I have read that the MTZ's perform well on the tarmac & wet conditions. They are a slighty softer compound then the Cooper STT's so you get good grip but the trade off is quicker tread wear.
I can't speak from personal experience, but I have being research this one myself.

Get the suspension and tyres you want at the same time, you wont have any issues then.

According to other PP members they have been averaging 60-70k of wear. If I get 60k I'd be pretty happy.

Only problem with that is I intend to get the ARB deluxe bar installed later on down the track. If I was to get the suspension and tyres done at the same time I'm worried that the front end will be higher than the rear (unless someone here can prove me wrong). I don't have the $$$ to do bullbar, suspension and tyres at the same time.

Nah your rear will always be higher. IFS are limited with suspension heights, this shouldnt worry you even if you got the HD suspension pack. Theres heaps of Prados out there that have aftermarket suspension and tyre with no bar work.

I'm thinking of getting the OME medium set installed (front and rear). Do you think I'll have a fairly rough ride at the front though? Do you think it will bounce around?

As Hutch says,, I am really happy with the OME Medium suspension on mine. I have the ARB Bar, but I certainly dont think your front ride height would be much different until you get the bar. I drove my Prado to ARB the day i got it to get the OME fitted, have done 38K on it till now, and drove my neighbours brand spanking Prado a few weeks ago. I gotta say the OME is a huge difference. Frankly, I have been spoiled. The new one drove like a truck... mine is like a Lexus in comparo...

Off to the dealer shortly to try to sort out this Diesel Knocking on cold mornings... (plenty of posts elesewhere here) ...getting worse by the day and sounding really ominous..hmmmmm.. hope i remain a Prado fan!

                      Hi Fungi203,

I got my 2 inch OME lift first. Havn't got my ARB Delux bar yet though, but i got mediums for front and normal for back as i will not be having much weight in the back. I find this setup to be a much nicer ride.I have 825mm on front and 815mm on back. I figure when i get the bar put on it should even out nicely. But at the moment you cant even notice it. I have had the OME for 2000k and still no drop from first install.

I have the ARB deluxe bar, OME mediums front and rear. I also run the MTZ off road. From the way my car sits on the road if I was to remove the bar the car would sit almost dead flat.

The mediums are fine on the front. In fact the ride is excellent. As for the rear, I tow a Tambo offroad camper trailer and usually have the camper loaded with water etc.. I normally keep the engel in the back of the car and get little or no droop at the rear end.

In my opinion you will be fine.
