  • Running different size profile in an emergency

At the moment I have 265/65/17 Toyo tyres on my Prado which are starting to get down. I am playing with the idea of replacing them a little early with 265/70/17 BFG AT's and putting the Toyo's on the camper trailer so it is running the same size rim. If I am in a remote area and end up with 2 flats, would I be able to run a 65 series profile with the rest of the 70's. It would be at a reduced speed and only till I could deal with the issue but am concerned it will cause bad diff wind ups. What do others think.
    Thanks Scott

Re: running different different size profile in an emergency

I boiled the oil in a work Rodeo 4x4 utes diff once because the spare was a different profile. It got so hot it came out of the breather and made one hell of a mess. It only took about 100km @ 80kph to get the diff red hot.

I guess in an emergancy you would do what ever you had too to get home, but if you can avoid it then you should.

I guess lower speeds and dropping the pressure in the other three would help... purely a limp home stratergy.

My sixth tyre has always been a legal(ie not bald) second hand tyre (consider it a "get you out of the shit tyre")... I also carry tyre repair equipment.

I figure if I've had two destroyed main tyres that I can't repair and I have to resort to the 6th spare then I should be thinking about putting my escape plan into action...

Thanks for the quick reply Mick, I guess you just backed up my concerns. I think what I will do is scrub out the tyres that are on it more then just replace them and leave the tyres that are already on the trailer on there.

Re: running different different size profile in an emergency

i recently ran one 225/70/r17 at the front right and 235/65/r17's everywhere else for a fair way (probably 800Km) until I could find another tyre. I only did this with the ok of many people - tyre dealers who couldn't help and other mechanics etc. I didn't put centre diff lock in of course (or any) and I kept a big eye on it. The worst place I felt something was in a multistorey carpark - it really had trouble getting the wheel to rotate quicker around corners. In all that driving we did about half of it on dirt roads so that certainly helped. i wouldn't put one different on the back in a hurry though.

For a marginal difference in profile (height) like you say it could be the difference between being stranded and getting home and we'd all probably do it in that scenario but you're also running the risk of doing that driving uninsured.

Thanks again for the replies. I think what I will do is leave the 15 inch rims on the trailer and carry a tyre repair kit for the car. I don't like the idea of getting 8 new tyres in one hit.

Re: running different different size profile in an emergency

When we were up the cape last year, the Patrol we were travelling with got a flat so we chucked the spare on... The spare was a smaller tyre so we made sure it went on the front (open diff). They drove all the way back to Cairns (including 300 odd kms on bitumen @ 100kmh) without any problems at all.

Putting it on the back would've been a different story I guess...

If you do go this route, make sure you have the smaller tyre on the front. But obviously if you can, having the right sized tyres all round would be ideal.

Re: running different different size profile in an emergency

I am guessing what I could do is still put the 65 series on the trailer and a 70 series as a spare on the trailer. that would give me 2 spares the right size before I even have to worry.

That is what I would be doing as it would not matter on the trailer because there is no diff to wind up and get hot

                      Please educate me

                      Guys

I have a chance to buy three steel rims which are 17 x 7.5" wide. The tyres are BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A LT 265/ 70 R17 112/109Q in very good condition with 7 to 8 mm of even tread. These are 6 stud wheels

I am looking to put these on my new camper trailer. The dilema I have is that my 120 Prado tyres are 265/65 17R Pirelli Scorpian ATR.

I am concerned that the difference between a 265/70 R17 and a 265/65 17R would prevent rotation onto my 120 Prado in case of an emergency. I may just buy them anyway as they are a good price but it would be good for them to be interchangeable.

I am assuming this is a fairly simple question to those in the know but can someone educate me please.

                      Many thanks in advance

If you happen to have at least two of these rims/tyres on you when/if you have an emergency change both wheels at the one end of the vehicle.

                          Re: Please educate me

Yep, they look to be a good buy, saw them on ebay

You will encounter two problems, firstly the steel and alloy rims require different wheel nuts to attach them to the car, the alloys have special wheel nut that sits into the wheel face, whereas the steel have a standard taper head, if you used the wheel nuts made for allloys on the steel, they wouldnt sit tight and flush allowing potential for wheel wobble and if vice versa you would damage the alloy rim, so you would need to carry a spare set of wheel nuts

Second issue, because the Prado is constant 4wd it is highly reccomended not to mix tyre sizes as you would have either one wheel or one axle rotating at a different speed, potential for expensive breakages

Theoretically you could run one axle with the lower profile tyres (thats 2), but i wouldnt take the risk

Still in all, if you plan on moving the Prado to 70 series tyres, these are a good buy and a good start to a longer term plan

I was going to bid on them myself for a new CT that is being built for me in Brissie at the moment, but had already sent my rims up there

                          Good luck with it

One spare on each. I carry a good compressor and a tyre repair kit that I have never used.

In case I destroy two tyres on either car or van I need to buy the correct wheel nuts to fit a mix of 2 steel wheels and 2 alloy wheels on the Prado or 3 steel and one alloy on the van.

Any advice as to the best arrangement if I have to mix two steel and two alloys on the Prado !!!
