    Cooper ST's here... LT265/75 r16.

When I had them fitted the Cooper guys suggested 38psi for on road conditions which seems to be working nicely. I usually put an extra 1 or 2 psi in them if I'm doing a long highway run and off road, well I usually start at about 24psi on the tracks for a bit of comfort and then reduce further as the terrain requires.

      Kelly Safaris 265/70/17

36 psi for regular road work .... 18 psi as a starting point for sand but have been down to 10 psi. 26 psi for rocky trails.

These are my general 'rule of thumb' ... garnered from many trips with more knowledgeable Pradopointers .... and a bit of trial and error.

36 psi tends to keep the tyre wear even ... up to 38 or 39 if I'm carting a load around on the highway .... but the higher pressures get the tyres chirping too much on corners when running empty.

      My 2 bob

      Cheers

        Hey Hutch,

Been over Nagala Rocks plenty of times in my Hilux (05 dualie with the Prado V6), but am a bit worried with the clearance on the Prado. Is yours raised? I haven't had too many problems unless you meet someone coming the other way .....

Standard size 694's, no lift, did it going north no worries on 22 psi, high range 1st gear, was very soft, coming home had to go down to 16 to get up the first little hill. PLENTY OF RIGHT FOOT.

                  Agree with Hutch

1st gear, high range, plenty of right foot - did it easy - ground clearance was not an issue.

if you have anything less then 34psi in the grandtreks teh squal like pigs in the corners.

i used to run 40psi in them, and we have shocking roads here in rocky.

i got better economy, and better tyre wear.

that was warmed up tyre pressure btw.. drive around for 20 minutes, then check them.

Bridgestone 694 90,000 so far, at least 50,000 with 22ft van in tow at posted speed limits.
Been right around Aus and have done approx. 1o,ooo+ on dirt as well.
Car only I run pressures at 34psi cold, and with van in tow 36-38psi cold.
Tyres wearing very evenly so pressures cant be too far out.

                        Re: Tyre Pressure question?

I am wondering what preasure to use on my Coopers ATR's (265/65/R17) for normal hard surface driving around town. Normally no load and just the driver.

The placard on the door says to use 200Kpa (this is 29 psi), but this a lot lower than most people seem to use when I looked at the data here and on other web sites. I am thinking something around 35 psi is probably closer to the mark. I have read about the 4psi rule and might try this out next weekend.

                          Re: Tyre Pressure question?

Don't woory about the placard. We have run many varied pressures in our cars but as a summery:
                          Around town 40 psi
                          Towing on road 40 f 42 r
Towing offroad, start at 25 and air down if needed.
Trailer start at 35 and air down.
Gravel road, 30-35 for good dirt, speed 80-100kph
Gravel road bad condition, 25-30. Less than 80 kph.
Sand - start at 25 and if the car is working a bit hard go to20 or lower.
Offroad - depends on conditions but as a rule we start at 25psi.
Last year we did a Simpson Crossing at 20psi (2 cars). The original toyota tyres struggled a little and the BFG 265/70/17 did it easy.
As a summery the lower the pressure the lower your speed. Just remember also the lower your pressure the higher the tyre temperature. It is sometimes (mostly) temperature that causes failure of the tyre.

For fuel economy we run our tyres up to 40 and put up with a bit harder ride. On my last set of BFG allterains 265/70/17 run mostly road at 40psi. Using a 5 tyre rotate we aceived 115000km. This included the Simpson, Tassie and towing a van Bris to Cairns.

                            Re: Tyre Pressure question?

I have Cooper ST tyres on my 120. We just finished a 7000km trip from Sydney thriugh SA's Googs track, Gawler ranges, Flinders ranges, Coffin Bay NP and Port Lincoln NP (lots of dunes). After that Kinchga NP and Mungo NP in NSW on the way back. I had them at 40psi for black top highway, 34psi for gravel and 15-18psi for sand. Got bogged only once in Googs while towing the camper trailer (not recomended). In future I'll stick to these pressures.

                                Re: Tyre Pressure question?

This still leaves me all confused. Plenty of people seem to say "This is what I use" but I cannot see anyone quoting any thing other than personal opinions. Can anyone point me to AUTHORATATIVE info on why I should use different to the manufacturers recommendations? Surly the vehicle and tyre manufacturers should know best.
I am talking lightly loaded highway here, not aired down for off road work.
