  • 9" wide wheels

has anyone had a 9" wide wheel on their prado yet? or has anyone test fitted one?

a 17x9 to be exact. i have seen a couple of hilux's getting around with the Mickey T wheels on them. look good, but you can't fit a 16" on the prado.

no one in town has a 17x9 in stock or in their showroom so i can't test fit one with out actually buying a single wheel.

i have orders from the missus to fit big wheels and tyres.

i had a quick look on the MT website, and the 17"s only come in the 9" wide. the state the offset is -12mm (neg) can anyone compare this to the stock GX 7.5" steely? i think the stock steely is +30mm (pos). is this correct?

also, i was thinking about the scrub radius of the 9"ers. i would imagine this would be a problem, but i don't know considering the offset is a big difference to stock. i would assume the wheels will be too wide and the flares will not cover them completely. can anyone shed any light please?

    any info appreciated.

This link will help you to work out the effect the difference in offset will have.

      Hey mate,

What size tyre do you plan to run on the 9inch rim? you can run 33inch or 35inch tyres on an 8inch (not that you could fit them under the guards.) Also it would need to be a fairly negative offset to avoid tyre rubbing on the upper arms.

        Re: 9" wide wheels

rang ryan at fourby's today. worked out 9"ers are no can do. the scrub radius is too large and the wheels and tyres will stick out about 65mm from the side of the flare.

ryan is looking for some 17x8"s for me. i just thought someone might have been curious enough to try it.

thanks for the replies. i will post up pics when i fit some wheels and tyres.

I would suggest the largest tyre you are going to get under a "lifted" Prado (and without major scrubbing issues)is the MTZ or similar in 265/70/17 these are very comfortable on the standard 7.5 rim.

An unlifted Prado will have clearance issues in rough stuff and probably eat its own mudflaps pretty quickly upon turning.

I cant see any reason to alter offsets and things when it all fits to the standard rims. Stick some 24's on it that will be bigger

            go the 17x8 wheels.

Im running 16x8 black steelies on my hilux with 33inch tyres and the Prado's have larger guards than the new hilux's do, so I cant see why you couldnt run a 33inch tyre.

look for a 0 or +10 offset 17x8, that will be ideal, give you the clearance off the edge of the Upper control arm for a 285/70x17, and some slight trimming with a decent lift.

Prado rims are a +30 offset.... going to a 0 offset will 17mm more inner clearance but will stick out an extra 43mm

going to a +10 will give 7mm more inner clearance and will stick out an extra 33mm

Yes you can fit a 16 inch rim on the current Prado.

I have a spare 16 inch (ROH Trak 2) white sunraysia style rim with landcruiser offset and 265/75/R16 BFG A/T and it fits. No problems with the caliper clearance or anything else. And the rolling circumference is the same as my stock alloy rims with 265/70/R17 BFGs.

Anything sticking out past the flare on a 90 degree upright from the ground is in violation of the Aust ADR's and can get you defected. (in some situations it could also void or complicate your insurance in an accident).

I agree with your sentiments entirely....BUT, if you want big tyres and more clearance offroad its a risk you take......Im just saying that on a Prado it is possible, but each to their own if they want to do it.
