  • Under rated tyres on my Prado.

After being given the OK by the minister of finance to change my 6" GX steelies to 7.5's, I went to see what deal I could get today.

At this point I'll tell you, I have had my Cooper ATR's falling apart. I lost a tyre due to a lug coming off last month and on the weekend another has started delaminating.

I bought the GX in Late August with the following tyres:

    Cooper ATR 235/65/R17

Whilst I found out later they were too small when I lost the first one, after going to approx. 10 tyre places along the NSW coast, trying to find something to replace that, not one of those who looked at what I had noticed they were load rated to 104T.

Today the place I went to noticed this and checked the specs on the prado tyre plate: must be 108S for the 225/70/R17 or 112S for the other size (forget what it is).

So, that means I've been unregistered & uninsured since I bought it & currently still am.

I may be naive but I expect a Toyota dealer to sell a roadworthy car.

Not knowing what to do, I rang a close friend who is Director of fair trading in Tas (handy to have )
stated what had happened and asked whether I was being rediculous or did I have a case?
He said straight out I have a case as it voids the statutory warrantee. They need to help. Usually he said they (dealer) should come to an agreement on how much tread was left on the vehicle and pay the balance of what an appropriate (i.e.Cooper ATR) tyre(s) would cost to bring the vehicle to a roadworthy status.

I will be calling the dealer tommorow and discussing it with them - will inform (if I'm allowed) as to what happens

Either way, I have a renewed trust in Cooper knowing the load could have impacted on my shocking experience with the tyres.

Would someone be able to tell me how much tread (mm) is on a brand new ATR so I can decide what % of tread was left?

In the end I'm chuffed I'm getting new 7.5" rims & probably muds
What a great B'day present for yesterday!
    Cheers - Phil Taylor

I would think you have a % of a comeback form the dealer as they have sold the car not c omplying to ADR's and road rules.

The fact is an under rated tyre could have caused an accident, would be horrible for them then, wouldnt it??

That's what I figured but, if we don't say something, nothing will be done about getting some of these dealers to think about how they do things.

I cringe at the fact that we we've travelled 21,000 Km's on them.

Pay peanuts get monkeys...I picked up a new car today. Order specifically stated Toyota OE reverse sensors, dealer fitted crap aftermarket sensors. Now they have to replace the rear bumper on a brand new car, what a PITA.

To answer your question about tread depth, according to the Cooper web page it should be 10.7mm new.

Re: Under rated tyres on my Prado.

Not only does the tyre plate give the spec... but just to be sure, it says (In english too  ) something along the lines of "a tyre with a lower load index must not be fitted"

I have a renewed trust in Cooper knowing the load could have impacted on my shocking experience with the tyres.
I'm doubtfull on this. The load index is only 100kg per tyre less (900kg vs 1000kg per tyre) and as a whole still exceed GVM by 700kg. The speed rating is actually 10kmph better. So while they are technically illegal, from a purely engineering point of view they are OK.

The Cooper ATR has a bit of a reputation of having the issues you describe...

Re: Under rated tyres on my Prado.

I had multiple casing failures with a set of 265/70/R16 Cooper ATRs on my 90 series. One died at less than 5,000km sheding a third of the tread in one hit. The car had this constant wobble which was very evident especially on smooth freeways and no amount of balancing or wheel aligning could fix the wobble. The tyres were delaminating. Even when I chucked the remaining Coopers onto my camper trailer and shod my Prado with BFGs, the trailer tyres let go.

The warranty supposedly offered by Cooper is crap. They only warranty for tyres driven on capital city streets only. Have a look at page 14 in the lateset edition of 4WD monthly - the Cooper ad says "Cooper's famous mileage guarantee ...is available in capital cities only as country road surfaces vary too greatly from area to area." YOU THINK?
