    Re: BFG AT's after 15kms

Wowsers that some high pressures
Just come home from 5500km from the centre and Simpson. ran mine at 38 on bitumen and 20 in the desert. Still look brand new. They had done around 10,000k on the tar before we left.

I put a new set on before our recent trip to Oodnadatta/Coober Pedy/Corner Country and after 4500km on dirt @ 26psi with a Jayco Swan on the back they look pretty much like yours. No Punctures - I was pretty happy

Definitely high tire pressure. Max we run ours here is 35 psi and down to 10-12 psi in the sand. No problems with pop outs or blow outs. You should get some money back or have new tires installed for free, no tire should disintegrate that quickly, unless they have explicitly stated that you need to operate within normal operating pressure, and that would be anyone's guess.

          Re: BFG AT's after 15kms

I'm with everyone else - 51 PSI = ouch! They are rated only for 51 psi cold at maximum load.

20,000km on my BFGs, 75% of this out bush. 27 - 28 gravel, 40 bitumen. Tyres still look almost like new - once you wash the red dirt off.

Done the Gibb about 6 times with only one flat and that was the result of a rock pushing the tyre in on the rim causing the air to escape whilst crossing a creek. Simply re-inflated with the compressor and got on with the journey.

            Re: BFG AT's after 15kms

The rears look like they have done some work, but they don't look shagged to me. Maybe they look worse in the flesh?

            1. The frronts have excessive centre wear due to a washout we hit at the end of the Gibb that knocked the front alignment out (the steering wheel was at 90deg to centre). I had to pull into a station, jack it up and align it by eye and the degree markers on the lower control arms. This was less than ideal and when we hit Derby and then Broome no-one could touch it for 3-4 days, hence I drove it back to Perth as is. It was fixed this morning and the guy said that although it tracked straight the alignment was way out. I knew this as the tyres were scuffing and were really warm when we pulled over for coffee stops.
Sorry, it just doesn't work that way. Excessive centre wear is caused by over-inflation. Period. Bad wheel alignment will skew the wear on the tyres to one side or the other. If the alignment is out, and the tyres are over inflated, you will see the results of both problems in the tyre wear given enough kms.

I find anything over 38 to be uncomfortable. Mid 20's for dirt is the go.

same advice from our tyre place too, although we did drop them to 22 at one stage, I was inpressed just how good they looked after our trip to the birdsville races last year (they were fitted 2 months prior - so had two months of blacktop driving before the trip), still have the same treads on and the have done about 30k since our trip, and have heaps of life yet, I know this as my husband has been eyeing them off for a spare set for his hilux  , but he tells me he wont take them yet

                Re: BFG AT's after 15kms

I have had two sets of BFG A/T on the Jackaroo and on trips loaded with gear found the 4psi rule worked well.
Essentially cold 37-38 would mean 41-42 hot tyre pressure for driving around at home, when heavily loaded had to up at 41-42 cold and 45-46 hot.
Tyres felt really hot to touch if I didn`t up the pressure and seemed to wear quickly when heavily loaded and sitting around 110-115km/hr.

On dirt road that meant around 26-30 psi cold depending on speed typically 70-90km/hr. That worked fine for me. On sand 18 psi hot which cooled down to 15pis and then down to 10 if I had to.

For some reason the second set of BFG A/T weren`t as good, more rubber ripped out of it, less grip on wet bitumen, possibly harder?
That is why this time around when I asked the local tyrepower about getting BFG A/T for the Prado and they steered me towards the D694 I didn`t need much convincing.

Have they changed the BFG A/T formula??

Has anyone notice their car tram lining on country roads after installing BFG AT's?

I recently had a set installed with 38psi all round and the car was very difficult to control on the highway.

No problems here and I have about 20k on mine now. As per another post all I can suggest is check the alignment.

                      BFG AT's after 15kms

I agree. Pressures too high. We did the Flinders Ranges, Oodnadatta Tk, Dalhousie, Mt Dare, Red Centre and the Mereenie Loop last year on BFG's and the tyres were fantastic.

No punctures and very little wear. We were pretty heavily loaded and ran 38 front and 40 rear on the road and about 28-30 on gravel. We got down to 25 on the gnarly roads like out to Dalhousie. Ran at about 80-90 km/h on the fast dirt sections.

My mates Cooper ST's which ran the same pressure were quite badly chipped with lugs torn off. Very happy with the BFG's.

                      Cheers, Sam.

                        Re: BFG AT's after 15kms

I got to say that the BFG's do have a large range of operating pressures that seem to have no ill effect on uneven ware. You can run them at mid 20's or 50 & still have no issues...

I did a trip from Wagga up to Winsor & back (all freeway) with the car virtually empty bar fuel. Because I knew that I pumped all tyres up to 50psi....We did feel every change in the concrete blocks on the freeway, but we also returned 11 l/100 @ 115km/h...

A resent trip to Fraser fully loaded I used 38psi front & 40 rear on the way up & again we got around 11l/100.

For general use to & from town (35km) i use 35psi all round. A compromise between comfort, road manners & economy......

                        Cheers

PS I had Cooper ST's when I bought the car...never again.....chips & lugs missing after a few day trips to the high country, the BFG's handle that country so much better.

The pressures you were running with the BFG's are correct for sharp gravel driving. No matter what the weight, keep the tyres round = no punctures. Funny what you pick up off old bushy landowners.

If you did any beach sand driving or pindan sand driving with high pressures the tyres heat up and harden the rubber which leads to chipping and tearing bits of lugs when back on gravel roads.

                          Matt

Sounds like a alinment issue here. On my second Prado both had lift and BFG. No traming after 160000 km (both cars) . Maybe use a different wheel aliner who can setup the front better.
Are you lifted, how are the shocks etc?
