  • 16" Steel Rim - Is it worth it?

Just about to purchase a second set of mud terrain tyres and undecided if I should go 17" GX steel rims or 16". My main concern if I where to go 16" is potentially voiding my insurance policy.

    What are your thoughts?

I didn't think 16" rims would fit on a 120 due to fouling the brake calipers - or so I was told.

I've fitted 16x8 landcruiser rims after some grinding of the front brake calipers  and i've heard ROH trak 2 rims will fit too. I've tried dymanics rims and they didn't come close.

Benefits are cheaper tyres, more tyre bag offroad and you don't care as much when u bang up steel rims... On the otherhand steel rims weigh more which = more fuel.

There is a good description at LCOOL. In short, you need to grind the brake calipers to fit 16" rims.
Legality or impact on insurance I have not confirmed, but brakes are usually a touchy subject wrt mods.

Posed with the same issue I chose to use 17" rims rather than grinding the brake callipers. I’m not 100% sure of the ramifications of grinding the callipers and saving a couple of dollars on tyres didn’t seem worth opening the legality/insurance can of worms.

          Leachy.

Thanks for the feedback people. From what I can see is I might be better off going with 17" steel (GX) rims, I'm not keen on shaving off brake caliper.

I think most people here have gone with 17" due to insurance issues.
Just be sure if you go with GX rims, get current ones as the older GX (06 and older) are 6" rims and unless you're happy to last out the Prado's days using cooper ATR's or something with similar tread, you wont find anything in correct tyre sizes even remotely useful off road.

For this reason I went and got 17x8" steelies (I have a GX).
