  • Lifting your wheels (without dropping yor nuts)

Hey guys for the people who put their second spare on the roof how the hell do you get it up there without braking your neck is it feasable to put a blanket down the side of the car and sort of roll it up

Or is there a better way

Re: Lifting your wheels (without dropping yor nuts)

With some difficulty. With my ARB roof rack, I normally use the other rear spare as a prop to help me lift it up until I can sufficiently lift the tyre so as to rest it against the external side of the roof rack. I generally life the wheel in two movements, sorta like a snatch and lift. But I make sure that when I am ready to lift the wheel, I have sufficient strength to lift it in one movement and rest it against the side of the roof rack. I then slide the wheel onto the roof rack.

It's certainly not something you'd want to do too regularly.

Getting the wheel down is, of course, much easier.

        You guys are pussies

I use a 6ft ladder, get it to the top of the ladder then roll it across the roof. I've never had to get it on the roof in the bush, fark knows how I'd do that

If you are going somewhere where you need an extra tyre then you should not go alone. That other car/person can help lift one of these heavy suckers up or down. I've jumped off the roof tray with an alloy and rubber over my shoulder and when you hit the ground you really feel it.

Isn't the one on the roof usually the 2nd spare... ie. tyre with no rim :?

I think most take tyre & rim - in case a rim is bent or cracked.

I thought this was the norm :?:
I have a friend who relies on just an inner tube which he thinks he'd be able to put inside his staked tyre :?
Some who do true offroad trips (i.e. no tracks) for work purposes take a few rims and a stack of tyres as well.

As for getting steel rims up..On top of the rear spare, then heave ho...but I like the ratchet idea, may try that next time.

Re: Lifting your wheels (without dropping yor nuts)

                    This is doable single handed.

I position the wheel adjacent to the rear door and just outboard on the drivers side. I then roll it up my right leg (holding leg at a bit of an angle to make it less of a straight lift) until I can push it against the side of the spare wheel on the rear door. If you keep pressing you can rest here if it's been a bit of an effort. Then, roll the wheel up the spare until it balances on top of the spare wheel and rest it against the roof rack. From here, it's a quick lift at the bottom of the wheel to horizontal and wiggle/slide to get it properly on the rack.

I'm a 72kg weakling recovering from frozen shoulder, so if I can do it, anyone can.

Re: Lifting your wheels (without dropping yor nuts)

Obviously you'd have to know how, and have the means to change the rims over. (which I don't btw ops: )
If it's just long range 4wd'ing and not exploration you'd have to pretty unlucky to damage two rims at once... I guess a front on accident would damage both.

First tyre damaged... swap the 1st spare over.
Before 2nd tyre gets damaged (that night or next town) change 2nd spare tyre onto rim.

I've never long range toured so I'm just putting together what I've read and heard about how people do it.
                      Cheers, Leon

Re: Lifting your wheels (without dropping yor nuts)

I have steel Prado rims on my camper trailer so I already have 2 spares (one on the Prado, one on the trailer). When we went to the GTG I put the alloy spare on the roof and another steel spare on the door, I had 3 spares all up. Thankfully didn't have to use any spares. Next long haul trip I'll probably take the 3rd spare as a tyre and not whole wheel.

Yeah that was my next question as we will only do the oodnadatta and the gibb should i take a cmplete wheel or just a carcass as the second spare and find a mechanic to change it

Oh my camper wheels will not be matched to the car if that factors into the equasion

You want at least 2 full spares so If you camper wheels aren't matched looks like you're taking a complete wheel

If you want to take a carcass, learn how to change it yourself. No use waiting for a mechanic out in the donga...
