Re: Lifting your wheels (without dropping yor nuts)

    Thanks Jamie

Yeah i looked at changing it myself however once i added up the cost of tyre pliers vs the cost of a steel rim and a tyre which i already have i am figuring i will just be throwing one complete wheel up on the roof. Ps is there any reason you put the alloy on the roof and not the steel.

Geez it all adds up by the time i add up all the acessories plus everything else and the down ball weight of the camper i recon i am fast approaching GVM

      Yes because it was lighter

Re: Lifting your wheels (without dropping yor nuts)

Hey photo prado how easy are the tyre plier devises to use as i am still thinking of taking just a carcass and changing it if really get stuck

Understand the complete wheel is the best option but i suppose i am taking a bit of a risk management look at this considering only about 10% of our planned trip will be off road. Also considering the weight saving as i also need to get 2 bikes and some odds and ends on the roof as well

So back to my question can a mere mortal use these manual tyre devises or do you need to be 120kg plus i have heard mixed reviews

Can the old method of driving up on the flat tyre still work to break the bead and then lever it off or is that now a no no with aluminuim rims (last time i manually chaged a tryre was with a split rim and it all but fell off

Re: Lifting your wheels (without dropping yor nuts)

Chester, I've seen the demo at the 4wd show, and it doesn't take a lot of brawn. I didn't buy it though

I've got the 6th wheel for outback trips - It will always be on the roofrack on those trips, or in the garage otherwise. The disadvantage of just having the carcass is that you cannot rotate it with the other tyres, so it will always be unused - unless you have a tyre failure you will not get any benefit.

Re: Lifting your wheels (without dropping yor nuts)

Hi guys, I find it interesting that everyone sees the need to take so many spares, ive done around 25000kms off the bitumen in the last five or six years including, the Oodnadata track a couple of times, camerons corner and part of the strez, the tanami twice, the gibb river road, around the red centre including the Meerinie loop and the road (road is stretching the truth a bit) to Ruby gap, as well as heaps of other trips to the flinders and around national parks and in all that time ive only had one flat, and that was on a grand trek that was almost bald and was due to be replaced the next week. In my opinion correct tyre pressures for off road are the single most important thing to consider. I take my advice on tyre pressures from a guy i reckon should know, Adam Plate who runs the Pink Roadhouse at Oodnadata. he has seen and fixed more flat tyres than most of us have had hot dinners. look at his website http://www.pinkroadhouse.com.au/ he has a page on there somewhere with hand drawn pictures of cars and what they recommend for each setup. correct tyre pressures also mean a better ride and less wear and tear on your vehicle.

            Cheers Andrew

              Totally agree on tyre pressures.

Question for you, do you insure your car? I'm happy to take the weight/fuel economy hit so I don't end up camped at a roadhouse somewhere waiting for them to deliver a 17 inch tyre at twice the price it costs in the city.

Re: Lifting your wheels (without dropping yor nuts)

Hi D4D, I certainly do insure my car and i take your point, also my camper trailer has 17" prado wheels so i do actually carry 2 spares, 1 car and 1 trailer, just pointing out for the inexperienced that avoiding the problem in the first place is far better than solving the problem after it occurs, i also carry a bead breaker that i made as well as tyre repair equipment but to this point i haven't needed the extra insurance.

                cheers Andrew

Re: Lifting your wheels (without dropping yor nuts)

This is an interesting discussion. I've often thought about the need to have a large portion of the roofrack occupied by a second spare wheel. And how many get lugged all over Australia and never come off
For most situations where you get may a couple of punctures would not 1)having LT tyres an 2) carrying a good tubeless tyre repair kit be a good compromise ?
We carry a Safety Seal kit http://www.safetyseal.com.au/products1.htm and I with this I have repaired sizeable holes in a couple of minutes ( even if it takes two or three plugs ) and still have a workable spare.
Agree there's situations in outback travel where you may totally shred a tyre or stuff a rim. If I was doing something like Canning stock route by meself for example, I'd definitely have a spare rim PLUS a couple of spare tyres AND Tyrepliers AND a plug kit. But for most other trips, I dunno if it's necessary.
                  Cheers, Wayne

Re: Lifting your wheels (without dropping yor nuts)

Yep I carry a plug kit too.

The best bit of advice in this thread is to check your pressures and drive to the pressures. If you're running 26-28psi knock a few km/h off.

Yea so true.. Thats what the wife is for :-) Only reason she comes with me; is to lift the tyres onto the roof and to give directions... That ways, I knows my place and teh GPS can have a well earned rest
