Hope nobody minds me resurrecting this thread.

I'm thinking of blowing away the Dunlop Grand Treks as well. My plan was to drive straight from the dealer to a tyre shop on the day of pickup. However......... today I go into my local Bob Jane T mart to ask about a swap over deal for some D694's or something similar. Just to get an idea about what sort of cost I might be up for.

Initially I'm told absolutely no way would they give me anything for 2nd hand tyres. Even after 15 minutes work to get from the dealer to the tyre shop, they still consider them a used 2nd hand tyre. If any deal was to be done at all, I'd be lucky to get $50.00 a piece for them. This is after telling me that new Grand Trek's are priced around $317.00 a piece just moments before. The same price as the D694's incidentally. I couldn't believe it. $317.00 to $50.00 in 15 minutes!

Then I'm told that the 265/65 R17 size is uncommon and that I'd be hard pressed to find any dealer willing to do a decent swap over deal. I was also told that Prado's use the 265/70 R17 size which is even less common???? Geez are they having me on or what?? My paperwork says otherwise but hey I'm just the stupid customer.....

Has anyone here in Perth done a swap over lately? If so can you recommend a dealer north of the river? Usually Bob Jane's are extremely good and I've bought several sets of tyres from them over the years, so I'm not sure what to make of this. Maybe they just don't do swap overs.......?

This won't help you in Perth but I did a swap at Bob Jane in Brisbane for $300 for the 5 and they were fitted before I picked up vehicle from dealer.

              That was in 7/07

I swapped mine also before driving the vehicle. Tell Bob Janes to shove off, they are trying to rip you.

You should be able to comfortably get around 200 a piece. They costs them that wholesale. (grand craps).

Yeah, I think you are right Team Piggy.

I called another Bob Jane's today to ask about a swap and got exactly the same story. Absolutely no way would they do any kind of swap deal. The guy I spoke to even went as far as saying they just wouldn't be able to get rid of cheap tyres like Dunlop Grand Trek's. Forget it. Full stop. Don't bother.

This guy said the only way to do it would be to ask if the dealer will refund you the cost of the Grand Trek's from the sale price of the vehicle and then I buy what I want and have Toyota fit them to the car.

This guy also said that the 265/65 is essentially the wrong size for the Prado. He says that if you were to go along the freeway at 100km/h on your speedo you would notice people creeping past you. Prado's are correctly geared for the 265/70's. Once you fit that size, things are bang on what they should be. Said that toyota fits the 265/65's to reduce the time between services by racking up your odometer more quickly. Reckons most people with Prado's fit the 265/70's. Seems to be the size Bob Janes are putting on Prado's seeing as I was also told that the 70's were the correct ones at the previous dealer I spoke to.

I'm hoping you guys can offer comment on that because now I really don't know what to do.... Like it's only a difference of 5% in aspect ratio which is within legal size variation but I just know Toyota will kick up a stink about it come warranty time.

To add fuel to the fire, this guy also told me that a lot of Toyota's and Nissan's are now coming out of the dealer yards with BF Goodrich tyres and not the Grand Trek's. I'm sure I read that BF Goodrich tyres did not have the same sidewall strength as say Bridgestone D694's. However this guy couldn't praise them (BF G's) highly enough. Might do more research on that.

Might try some other tyre dealers too for a swap over deal.

Interesting comment. I bought my bus 2nd hand with 265/70/17 Kelly Safaris on it. I got pinged once by a camera on the freeway when I had to cruise control locked on 100 km/hr.

On one of our WA Pradopoint trip one of the lads had me at 105 - 106 Km/hr when my speedo was saying 100.

On our recent trip around the country I had a lot of time to check this - and the difference is 600 m per 10 Km, or 6 Km per 100 km - or 6 %.
I have checked and rechecked this over many thousands of kilometers.

Now either my maths is screwy or this Bob Jane bloke is full of shit - and it could easily be either

Still - it's a good way to spark an informed debate ... fire away.

                    Cheers

                      IRON_PAWW,

I don't know which dealer you are going through but I got my Prado from Newtown Toyota in Welshpool and they offered me a $900 change over to Coopers. I'm pretty sure I could have chosen what ever brand I wanted.
I didn't bother doing the change at new and have been looking at the pros and cons of different options. After a lot of research I have decided that there is no tyre available that will perform the way I want off road whilst reatining that on road manners that my wife wants for day to day driving.
So I have just purchased a second set of CSA 17x8" rims and will put on 265/70/17 Mickey Tompson MTZs.
The second set of rims were only $110 each (new) and it should only take about 20 minutes to change them over, a cost and inconvienence that I happy to bare.
As for 65 vs 70 series I have noticed that my speedo definately reads high, about 6kmh at 100kmh, so the change should see it reading about right. I had thought it was just my speedo, but maybe it is all Prados.

                      Leachy.

This guy obviously is speaking Cr@p! The vehicle is placarded with 65 series tires!
The 3 prado's I have checked have 100% accurate speedos at 100kmh with 65 series tires. The ones on 70 series are all out from what i have encountered..... (the search button here will also show you that in a number of threads)...

Personally anything these idiots (especially "that guy") offer in advice I would dump in the bin straight away.
They are obviously prepared to bend the truth to try getting a sale on a tire that is NOT standard for the vehicle in question.
(that guy "did" tell you about your increased fuel consumption running 70 series too didnt he? I imagine so?? :x )

I did my swap at Bridgestone, no issues what so ever. (and no bullsh!te).. I would wash my hands with bob Jane by the sounds of it...

Just some advice for the WA pradopointers after tyres.
Midvale discount tyres are about the cheapest shop I've found on any tyre.
I don't know if they do trade-ins or not but worth a try.

Well there seems to be a consensus here that I've been led up the garden path in regards to the 265/70's. Seems that all you guys have found the 265/65's to be the correct tyre, just like the spec sheet says. It just goes to show how easily you can be given infromation that is just plain wrong. I'd definitely take the word of current owners over the word of a salesman. Makes you wonder though exactly why Bob Jane's are trying to push the 70's onto the Prado's.

As Team Piggy says, I might also try a Bridgestone tyre centre and see how I go there. Got a Bridgestone junk mail brochure this weekend which has the D694 265/65 R17's at $289.00 a piece.

Seems your math is spot on Chippy

Cheers for the low down guys.

Its idiots like those you come across that end up getting the end user in bother. Insurance issues, speedo issues etc.

It is shame that guys like that give business's bad names as the guys i deal with BJT at Chermside in Brisbane are brilliant. Would never sell you anything outside of queensland specs.
