I am probably going to do a second set of rims as well and was tossing between Wrangler MTRs , Mickeys and STT's.

I know Slads before his demise was on the Wranglers and was pretty happy with them, I knwo people with STT's and say they are good, but chip badly. And Mickeys seem to be reputable as well.
    Piggy,

I run 265/75/R16 MTRs on 16" rims. You also can get 265/70/R17 MTRs
which got the same OD. You also might want to consider Procomp Mud Terrains...

From what I heard production quality of MTRs has gone down a bit as well. Looks like happening to all tyres over the time...

      Stan,

Did Darren grind off the brake caliper on your rig to fit the 16?
      Kelvin.

Yes he did. The 17" steel rims for the Prado weren't available at the time thought...

I run a set of Cooper St 265/70/17 on the Prado, tonight I rotated the tyres, they now have around 10,000klm's on them, Up until now I have been very pleased with them on & off the road. why I say up until now is that when I removed the wheels from the vehicle to rotate them I noticed that all 4 tyres were starting to split about 10mm up from the rim on the inner side of the tyre. 1 of the tyres splits is 8mm deep by 40mm long, the other tyres the splits are just starting, as far as I can see the splits arent caused by cuts, just looks like the tyres are falling apart, no splits on the outside of the tyres, I run 36psi on the road & drop the pressures to 20 in the bush.
Looks like its a trip to the tyre man to get his opinion & see if Coopers will replace them under warranty, I have never seen this problem on any of the other brands of tyres I have had in the past.

          Cuts like these??

I had my 10,000 klm rotation done the other week (Cooper ST's 265/75r16) and we had a good look over them. They are wearing well, very evenly and very little in the way of chipping.

I always reduce pressure off road and run at 38psi around town.
          Cheers, Leon

I'm picking the car up and driving the two clicks from the Toyota dealer. Am I getting ripped or is this an average price? Any help appreciated.
            Hodgy,
Did you try Priens in Gordonvale? When I traded mine in I had done 1000k and the guys in Cairns didn't want to know me. I got 4x$50 + $250 for the spare and the ATR's were $10/tire cheaper than from the Guys in Cairns. Bill is a great guy to deal with. I got my wheels and tires for the camper off him as well.

I have had 5 friends run Cooper St's for quite a while (years)
2 of them have experienced delamination at speed, with major damage to bodywork when they let go and they were very lucky. They are all experienced 4wd ers and look at their tyre PSI
the other 3 experienced lots of chunking of tread where great chunks simply break off (this was in Vic high country with hard ground and rocky tracks)
None of them will touch them again and after seeing what happened neither will I

              Here is a link http://www.d2au.com/index.php?topic=353.0

the delamination issue happened to pre 2002 tyres because they were selling them so fast they didnt have time for the tyre to cure properly.

i know plenty of people off another forum that dont have an issue with the latest revision STTs and ST's.

i have had a great run with them, and have driven where there is no track on a few stations out in western QLD.

                  Id buy them again.

                    Hi Snaga,

My cracked tyres look very similar to yours except one tyre the crack was so bad I had to remove it & put the spare on in its place, good to hear you got warranty with out any trouble, I will be taking them into Fourbys in Brisbane tomorrow for them to look at.

                    cheers

That post was goanna's thread and pics, not mine.
I've been really happy with my ST's so far (fingers crossed as they say) and after the 10,000k rotation Hammond 4WD gave them the all clear.

Best of luck at Fourbys... I've heard they're a good bunch of blokes, lets hope it's true

What worries me is Cooper would have known that the tyres hadn't cured, but chose to take the risk (at our expense) just to make the sale.
Another example of large companies putting sales ahead of customer safety..
Yes that may have been the past, but unless the company has changed it could happen again.

Don't know if I'm willing to take that risk.
