    Gday peolpe,

Interested if anyone has fitted 275/70/17 tyres. With or without a lift? Couldnt find anything on the search. HAve been looking at BFG A/T's and Mickey Thompsons ATZ 4 Rib both in 265/70/17. HAd basically settled on the ATZ as love the look and the good things i hear about it on the bitumen. Also got quoted what i think is a pretty damn good price at $345 a tyre fitted and balanced. Almost forty five bucks cheaper than everywhere else.

Howerever then saw coopers do its ST in a 275/70/17. Would love a bit more height (still within the legal 50 mm limit) and would also fill out the arches once i get it lifted. After ringing around i got quoted an unbelievable $275 a tyre! Approx $125 cheaper than everywhere else! (the 265/70/17 was $250) Sounds too good to be true tho. Is there some catch im missing or have i just locked onto a crazily good deal? i think there is a six and ten ply version but still seems bloody cheap. According to their website it is an LT although rated at 114 not 121 like the mickey. What exactly qualifies an LT??? The load or the ply? Or does the ply determine the load? As you can see i am confusing the poop out of myself

I was also quoted $300 for BFG A/T's elsewhere ($40-100 cheaper than elsewhere) who told me some are made in Japan and some in US. According to him the Jap ones are shithouse. But the US ones unbreakable. (of course the "unbreakable" part is BS) Could this be why some dealers say there awesome and others say they have nothing but complaints?? Or is he just full of shit? I was almost sold anyway at that price until yet another dealer told me they were'nt LT at that size. The brochure says they are and ARB told me they are, until i asked him to double check and he came back saying they were'nt! Looked in the brochure again and found rated at 112 not 121 however still LT.

    What the?????????? :? :? :?

Sorry for the fifty billion questions in one!!

    Cheers, DEZ

    G'day Dez,
Didn't look like you got much help on this one... a buddy of mine recently put a set of 275/70/R17 Maxxis Bighorns on a 150 series with a 2" lift and reports some minor rubbing. I recently bought a GRJ120 and am about to get some Maxxis Bighorns and currently tossing up between 265/70/R17 and 275/70/R17... I'm keen to hear what you ended up going with and if you went with the bigger ones have you had any problems?

    Cheers,
    Graham

I don't know your location but be careful not to confuse the Draft National Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Construction and Modification with state government regulations and laws. In Queensland the Code of Practice means nothing and the limit of tyre diameter is +15mm / - 25mm. If you are actually in Upper Volta then maybe you are ok. The only option where the local rules are tighter is to have an engineer approve the fitment of the larger tyres.

        Hi Dez,

Just be aware that the spacers for the spare tyre carrier you got from me may not accommodate 275/70R17s. I'd say find a cooperative tyre store and try and mount one tyre before you buy a set. You may find interference with the rear door and/or the wiper arm.

The 12.7mm spacers you have will do 265/70R17. The 20mm spacer will do 275/65R17. I'm not sure what spacer size you will need for 275/70R17.

Hey amtz, ended up going with the ATZ's in 265/70/17 just to be on the safe side. Was just curious cos my boss has put 275/70/17 on his GXL with no lift altho admits to slight rubbing. He loves it tho regardless. Anyway love the ATZ's so far and Spacers worked a treat until, like i pm'd ya, the wooza backed into a telegraph pole and dented the rear door  So the spare is out of allignment and sitting on the paint work on one side. Bound to mark the paintwork opening the door. Why do they do this dammit!? Was a good test for your spacers tho, held up very well

Has anyone else done this? Im hoping i can get it suctioned out, but not sure..any panel beaters on here?

Good things about the ATZ on bitumen??? I can tell you first hand that the ATZ's are terrible on wet tar, they are lethal in wet tar conditions if driven without due care. It takes very little moisture on the road to make the ride a very unnerving experience.

Seriously? I drove three hrs down the coast when we first put them on in the pissing down rain and they were fine. Didnt have any issues whatsoever. The missus has driven to work in the wet plenty of times too in the last few weeks and loves em

Anyone else had problems with the ATZ's in the wet?

No. I've had them for a bit over 21000kms and I have not experienced any issues in rain on black top. I also don't flog the hell out of the car as it is the good family car.

Mav has the MTZs so maybe it was a typo. Not sure. I think he was looking at ATZs but the MTZs, from memory, were only about $10.00 or so more per tyre.

You see that is what I get for reading the forum after a trip back from Adelaide and being tired as all hell. Sorry folks I typed ATZ but my mind was saying MTZ's which is what I have on at the moment. My appologies for the misunderstanding. ops:

Re: 275/70/17, LT massive varying prices and opinions

                          G'day,
Just going back a bit in the conversation... Last week I had 275/70/R17 Maxxis Bighorns fitted after picking the car up (2004 GRJ120R) from ARB with a 2" lift OME suspension fitted. The clearance is TIGHT but it doesn't rub anywhere on full lock. Haven't given it a full test through the flex range yet though but even if it does rub a little it won't happen too often.

Had a little play with it in Dwellingup over the weekend and couldn't be happier with the tyres/suspension setup. There was one steep, muddy hill that lifted a couple of wheels and had a couple of wheels spinning initially. I had also fitted ARB air lockers front and rear... after engaging them the car crawled up the hill like it had ice picks. No rubbing during all of that so I think it's going to work out ok.

One word of warning for anyone fitting this size tyre when time is precious before a trip (like me)... the spare wheel WILL cause an issue unless you're lucky (like me in this case). The only reason that the spare tyre fits is because the alternating outie/innie/outie/innie lugs of the Bighorn tread pattern has an innie exactly where the rear wiper is. If it had been an outie in that position then the wiper would contact the tyre and could not get back to it's start/finish position. I got very lucky and it worked out first time but spacers will be going on the car as soon as I get a chance... probably wouldn't be so lucky changing for the spare in the bush if it ever happens.

You can definitely notice the sound of the muddies on the road but for me that just acts as a reminder to find some offroad tracks The Prado is otherwise very quiet so it doesn't take too much of a volume adjusment to silence the tyres. No problems with conversations at 110km/hr and certainly a lot less noisy than my Corolla and the Disco I owned previously.

Unfortunately the car is now confined to urban driving for a few months while life gets in the way of 4WD adventures and I also can't post any photos for a while. Will start a build-up thread when I do get the time though.

Currently waiting on ARB for the bull bar to arrive and then it'll be ready to tackle the trails of WA

                          Cheers,
                          Graham
