  • Tyre Impulse Buy - Gone wrong maybe?

Last week the mechanic told me my tires are close to needing replacing – current set 245/70/17.

On the weekend I was on ebay and came across these tyres:
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....=STRK:MEWAX:IT
and subsequently bidded and won them.

I am reasonably certain they are Good year Silent Armours:
    http://www.goodyear.com.au/TyreDetai...&from=nPerPage

The unknown bit is will they fit correctly and legally on my 2003 Prado GXL? ops:

I kind of assumed that since they were 245's that they will be ok.

Should be fine. It's just that they are 75 profile when the standard GX tyres are 70 profile. So they will be slightly larger in diameter but no biggie. Good buy I reckon. Now you can sell off the alloys to a Jeep owner and get the tyres for pretty much nothing.

Oh, just remembered that the tyres must meet the load rating specified on the tyre placard (which I think it does - 110)
And it also seems to exceed the speed rating as well.

I was lurking in the 150 forum section and came across this post:

Indicating that upto a 50mm wheel diametre increase is ok in VIC.

      Can anyone else confirm that?

Looks like I am posting the most in my own thread, but anyway... this is what I have found out.

The Vic roads guidelines seem to be changing and will be replaced by the NCOP:
        http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/ ... eb2006.pdf
This states not being 50mm over or 26mm under in diametre.

I guess the next question is when is this to be adopted/implemented?

Don't hold your breath regarding NCOP. 4WDrivers have been waiting a looong time.
The tyres will fit fine but won't be legal.

Yep, the Tech Manager at the RTA (NSW) has been telling me for the past 18-24 months that it is only a few months off.

No state authorities seem to be in agreement re allowing a 50mm tyre diameter increase, so not sure if that part will actually be in the final ratified NCOP.

Re: Tyre Impulse Buy - Gone wrong maybe?

Assuming that your tyre placard also states 265 65 17 is an optional tyre on 7.5" rims the 245 75 17 tyres are 9mm too large based on current state rules which allow a maximum increase in diameter of 15mm. Track will be fine as that wont change. To be strictly legal you will need an engineer's certificate. Main thing though is to notify your insurer. There will be no practical reasons not to run the tyres as they are the same diameter as 265 70 17 which are run by lots of PPers without problems.

              Some more info in here:

EDIT: The load rating sounded low and I just checked. The placard on my Prado states 112 or higher so at 110 they wont be acceptable to an engineer. Put them back on eBay or buy a Jeep?

Re: Tyre Impulse Buy - Gone wrong maybe?

I got the 110 load rating off the Dunlop tyre website for AT20 245/70R17. And so assumed that the GX tyre placard would state 110.

It looks like these tyres are a no-go then

i reckon you could almost split them up and sell them for a profit.. tyres off rims.

Re: Tyre Impulse Buy - Gone wrong maybe?

Actually, on the tyre placard, under the 17x6 rim section, it states a tyre size of 225/70R17 with minimum load and speed rating of 108S.

So the tyres are OK in terms of meeting teh load rating and therefore OK to be engineered.

ps. I have no idea why my tyre placard calls up 225mm width tyres when it should be 245mm because a 245/70R17 would give nearly the exact same diameter as the 265/65R17. However, googling 225/70R17 seems to point to the tyres on the GX 120 series. 245/70R17 only points to the GX on the 150 series.

cool thanks for your help guys.

I actually have some 17x6 GX rims, but I don't think these tyres will fit on them. Any idea why the load ratings are different for different rim sizes?

I would have thought that if 108 was okay for the car and that is the minumum then 110 would be ok. I won't actually know the finer details until I pick them up. So will report back.

                        Just an observation, but
The load rating is 108 but my placard also stipulates REINFORCED after the load/speed rating. My tyres, Dunlop AT3, also say on the sidewall.. 108S Reinforced
No idea if that is mandatory in the 108 load rating or even what it means.
