Plenty of prices, now what to do...

G'day all,

I'm off to Central NSW from Brisbane shortly and am looking at a 2nd set of wheels/tyres to whack on for the weekends out in the snow etc.

I can pickup a 2nd set of alloys for $400, just considering what tyres to whack on them. Most tyres except BFG's are very hard to get where I'm moving, and even the BFG's are up around $440.

Cheapest prices (fitted/balanced) I can find in Brisbane are below:
MAXXIS BIGHORN - $305
MICKEY THOMPSON MTZ - $400
COOPER STT - $410
PROCOMP XMT - $470

I'm leaning towards the Bighorns at the moment. I'm currently running Cooper ST's and havent had a problem with them, but wouldnt mind a mud tyre for those weekends up in the snow etc.

What do you think?

I think go the bighorns... should be able to get the price down some more though... I got a quote (email, no haggling) for $269 each fitted + balanced.

I may be a little naive, but a lot of what i've read on international forums is that ATs like BFGs are better in the snow than muds because the idea is to compress the snow into the tread pattern, and the muds wide self cleaning lugs just throw the snow out and are actually worse in the white stuff? But then again, Aus doesn't see that much snow so given the benefits in mud performance you might choose to go with them. Have you heard this line of argument before?
