  • what rims, close to original (backspacing)

    Hi,

I would like to have a another set of the rims+tires for my 2005 Toyota Prado. I know the standard size of the rims is 17x7,5 with the ET +30. This is what I learn on this website. But I did not find any correct value of the backspacing? I´m from Europe and would like to purchase a complete set (rims+tires) in USA because I have a friend who ships a lot of cars and stuff to Europe, so it would be cheap transportation.

I would like to use website www.tirerack.com where I have to select a car/year before I can select anything else. 2004 Toyota 4 runner seems to be OK option, it even list the rims 17x7.5 for 265/65R17 tires, but the ET is from -12 to +12 mm and backspacing 4.88 to 5.5 inch. No Prado or Landcruiser 120 is listed.

This is the link for selection of the rims, listed by weight
    http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/results. ... terNew=All

Would this work without troubles on my Prado? I do not mind a small difference to a stock rims as far as it will not cause any problem. Thank you so much in advance for your help

In the US I beleive the Prado is marketed as a Lexus and has a V8 engine.

    Please get independent verification.

    Try

    The numbers look right.

Re: what rims, close to original (backspacing)

Backspacing is related to offset. You can convert from one to the other. What you should be looking for is 17" x 7.5", ET30 offset, 6 studs on 139mm PCD.
The formula can be found here. This results in a backspacing of 5.43".

Anything less than the offset value, like the ones dereki linked to will result in the outside surface of the wheels being further from the body. This may or may not be the desired effect you want as a wider track will create more stresses on the bearings.

Prado is model 120, GX470 is Landcruiser 100 with V8, sold in Europe as well. But the rims seems to be good selection. Thank you for hint ET/backspacing. I have used a

        http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp

to be sure of the final result. I will stick with a 17x8 inch rims with the offset from +10 up to +25. With these ET, the wheels should be further from the body +5m for ET25 to 20mm for ET10. Even ET10 is still usable, I think. Will post a picture when receive it and put it on the car, but not earlier then spring 2011.

Once again, thank you very much for your help 8)

Re: what rims, close to original (backspacing)

I remember reading somewhere on here that someone got aftermarket wheels for the 150 and even though the size and offset were correct, the wheel was still hitting the brake components. So be careful is all I can say.

A basic diagram showing the difference between Offset and Back spacing.

17x8 0 offset wheels sit about 3-5mm inside the edge of the flare.

GX470 = 120 Prado.. LX470 is the 100 Series. click the "Look at on car" links on the rims in the links.

Thats what they call the 'x factor'. A technical term for the caliper spacing or clearance. Prado's need significant caliper clearance and in most cases offset only has a marginal bearing on the x factor.

They are simply a copy of the Toyota wheel and are a slightly different size and offset. I would imagine Toyota wheels are designed and made by one of the big name wheel companies in japan like Advan and Rays Engineering.

I have three speedy "grandes" for my camper trailer, they now come with a couple of different offsets, 1 to match the Prado and the other the Ford Ranger. the Prado offset rims are identical in every way, except the wheel nuts are taper seats, offset and size are exactly the same as far as i can tell. i am actually running one of the Grandes on the front off the Prado ATM trying to wear out my 8 BFG's evenly.

I also have a Speedy Grande. Same offset as Genuine Alloy. Running this ATM on front left. The surface of mine is almost like it has a platsic coating and the centre cap is different. You can pick up an original if you really want but no real point.

From their website the sizes and offsets are:
