  • BFG Triguard Failure

This is the result of short venture off the beaten track on BFG AT KO tyres. The "Triguard" 3 ply polyester sidewall was pierced in two places and the tyre deflated. On closer inspection a second tyre was almost deflated as well because I can see the white polyester carcass has been gouged out as well. A bit annoyed given the price of these tyres and that they are advertised as having "incredible sidewall strength". Is this just plain bad luck or has anyone else experienced sidewall weakness on BFG's?

That looks nasty, I have done a lot of outback miles on my BFG's and had no problems. The only flat tyre ive had was caused by a tech screw that i picked up in a car park.

Just wondering what pressures you were running when this happened, and what sort of terrain you were in?

    Cheers Andrew

I copped a small wooden stake through the sidewall on a brand new BFG AT 2 years ago. I saw the bit of wood on the side of the track and thought she'll be right. It went straight through the middle of the sidewall and tore a 20 cent sized hole. Touch wood though, that's been my only failure in 12 years and 3 sets of BFGs on 2 Prados.

Sometimes it doesn't really matter what tyre you have - if the spike is at the right place at the right time at the right angle then it's going to go through.

        Are they LT spec ?
I think you've just had a run of bad luck there. Were you on gibber rock or something else sharp ? Any chance you ran over some railway spikes or fencing wire ?
I've had BFG AT (Light Truck ) on a couple of cars and not had a problem.

They are pretty tough, construction but you still need to take care, pick your line etc.

          Re: BFG Triguard Failure

It was only a short trip across a fire trail and wasn't particularly rough so the tyres were not aired down which was most likely a mistake in hindsight. Terrain was a little rocky but not anything severe and there was some twig debris lying around. I'm guessing either a stick or metal object hidden on the ground has torn and pierced the tyre wall. I've seen sticks In the past bend metal components and go straight through tyres but not rip off a big chunk of rubber.

I originally ran BFG ATs as I had no trouble with them on my Hilux or 80series
but 400km after I got them put on we had a trip up near armidale and cut up the sidewall of 2 tyres quite badly
pressure was right, kept an eye on the line, just an unlucky bit of shale in the wrong place on a hillclimb and a railway spike

If you're not busting a tyre once in a while or scraping a bit of paint off then you're obviously taking the easy route and missing out on the best scenery!
